Open Question: Where can I get a proper list of low cholesterol foods and high ones to avoid?
moreOpen Question: How can my parents live to 100?
My dad is 65. He's 200 lbs and about 5'4". He has a little belly. He basically sits in front of the TV the whole day, and has a high blood pressure. He drinks like once every two weeks, and nothing more than beer (usually wine, though). He eats quite a bit of rice and roti (Indian flat bread), and doesn't have much spicy food (spicy meaning hot, he eats food with various spices and herbs). He eats quite a bit, and is always looking for a snack. Every 20-30 minutes, we find him with another snacks such as nuts and fruit (usually healthy stuff). He has gout (high uric acid). Everything else in his body in in normal range such as sugar, cholesterol, and other such stuff. His blood pressure gets slightly higher on occasion, and he can feel it. He knows when his blood pressure is high, and keeps checking it regularly. He hasn't had any major health problems, as long as I can remember. He's not very active, but one thing does scare me. He can sleep at any time. Like sometimes we walk in the living room, and see him sleeping, and we wake him up, and in two minutes, he's sleeping again. He always denies that he's sleeping, but he clearly is. He also snores quite heavily, but that has toned down a bit in the past few weeks. We always keeps worrying a lot, and never seems to be relaxed. HIs family has a record of high blood pressure, and his father ultimately dies of a heart attack. My mother is 55. She's 190 lbs and about 5'1". She's clearly overweight. Her mother recently passed away from a diabetes related complication. My mother said that she had high sugar until I was born, and then it went away. She has similar eating habits like my father. Everything with her is normal, but has a borderline sugar and triglycerides. She loves sweets, but has cut back quite a bit lately. She is optimistic but still feels helpless sometimes. She ponders in deep thoughts for a while then emerges with high spirits. She has quite an active social life with like 1 party a week (at least). She has some problems sleeping sometimes, but she makes up for it by having afternoon naps. She's a stay at home mom who keeps cooking and cleaning, so she's busy all the time, but she really hates the job. What are the chances of my parents living to be old, and how can I increase their chances? I want them to live long, so please be serious. moreOpen Question: my doctor said my cholesterol is 700.What does that mean? I know it is high but how high?

I went to the hospital because I was having mild pains in my chest, my jaw, and I had a headache. I have type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. So they admitted me. They ran a cat scan of my head, my chest, and my lower abdominal. Throughout the night ,they were taking tubes of blood from me, and the next day. The doctors came later on that evening and said that everything was okay. My question is, what was the purpose for them to take my blood? Do they run blood tests for everything, to find out whats wrong with you? moreOpen Question: My Mum has raised heartbeat?
I got a phone call from my Mum today from the doctor surgery saying they were getting an ambulance for her as she has a raised heartbeat. She suffers from mild emphysema and high cholesterol. She said she would phone when she knew more but that was 5 hours ago. I'm just a little worried so can anyone tell me what it might be and how serious it's likely to be? No smartass answers pleaseShe said she had an ecg but didn't say anything else about it. moreOpen Question: Should I be worried about my cholesterol? It's 202.?
I'm a young guy in my twenties. My BMI is 21. I exercise basically everyday, everything from biking to walking to running and stair climbing to yoga. I eat pretty healthy, lots of whole grains, fiber-rich foods, and vegetables. I'm also vegetarian. I do occasionally (once a week) indulge in something pretty bad: say, fried onion rings or a big ice cream sundae. But, day to day, I'm healthier than most anyone i know. My cholesterol is 202, though, high for a vegetarian, and high for someone so young. The "good" cholesterol is high also (93), but, my doctor was still alarmed that someone of my weight and health would be at 202. Should I worry? Should I take drastic steps, cut out ALL unhealthy food? Or is it possible my cholesterol just runs high and as long as I'm healthy it's nothing ot worry about? moreOpen Question: Doctors or cardiologists out there? Need medical advice?
I have always had high cholesterol (as high as 400) and have had problems with side effects from all the statin drugs used to treat it. Nearly all of the other meds out there have been tried and now my doctor is telling me that he is not going to treat this anymore- just wait for 6 months to recheck it. I am concerned that I may be in trouble. I have intermittent episodes at night where my heart beats once, very strongly, and then goes back to a normal rhythm. What would your assessment (from afar) tell you that I should ask my physician?I am only mildly overweight- approx 20 pounds- for my height. I eat a low fat diet and do 30 minutes of cardio exercise at least 5 days per week. My question is regarding whether this is something I should seek a second opinion for or is my doctor's plan an acceptable one, given the circumstances? moreOpen Question: What do you think about the artical I wrote?

To bulk up from weight training would take a lot of weight lifting and a diet with lots of protein. Strength training will increase the amount of muscle you have, which in turn will increase your metabolism, but not likely will not give you very much added bulk. The reason behind this is because women don't make enough testosterone as men. I took my 12 lb Shi-tzu to the vet with a distended tummy and congestion. She had xrays and it showed her gallbladder was much larger than normal. It also showed her stomach had a lot of air in it. The vet took some blood and this is where it gets even more confusing...her blood work showed her cholesterol was high and her triglycerides were very high. The only definitive answer I got was that the air in her tummy was from her swallowing air - really!? She had no answer for the swollen gallbladder, the high cholesterol and the very high triglycerides. She's getting an ultrasound on Monday to get a closer look at her gallbladder and see what kind of treatment is going to be necessary. All this took place on Tuesday and as of today (Thursday), she is even more congested, will eat only a few bites of food, sleeps most of the time and when I pick her up, she moans and I know her tummy must be hurting her. I called the vet again today and was told to give her 12.5 mg. of Benadryl 3 times a day for the congestion. The vet gave her a prescription of Albuteral for I guess, her breathing. I gave her a couple of doses but it didn't seem to help and it made her shake so bad, I didn't want to add to her misery. I'm confused and don't know what to do next. She's my best friend and I think I'm hurting more than she is (I doubt that but you get the point). Any answers would be nice. Thank you - Alex moreOpen Question: Lightheadness, vertigo, possible bruit: should I be worried?
For years I have been getting a sharp pain in the right side of my neck when my heart beats real fast. My physician said it may be a carotid bruit and to go to a cardiologist, who pretty much told me i was making it up and never did the ultrasound. Also, a week ago I was standing by my desk at work when all of the sudden it felt like my brain was vibrating inside my skull for about 5 seconds, immediately followed by a strong feeling of vertigo for a good 15 seconds. While it was happening somebody called me over to them but it was all I could do to grip the desk to keep from falling over from the dizziness. This has happened about 4 times in the last 6 months, and I am wondering if it could be related to my arterial pain, like my brain is losing circulation or something. I am only 18 though, so a blockage doesn't seem likely, though I know I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure do to pretty crappy genes. My mother has had outrageously high cholesterol (275+) for about 18 years now, and she refuses to change her diet. She eats cookies, ice cream, candy, chips, etc. and then she'll eat high fat foods like cheese, oils, cream, etc. I tell her that it is dangerous for her to eat these things because she is eating both high fat and high carb, and that'll clog her arteries. I've tried to show her pictures of what the actual clogged arteries look like (as have her doctors). I am afraid that she is going to die of a heart attack or stroke because she won't change the way she eats! However, she claims that 18 years of tests have ALL been wrong and that she doesn't really have high cholesterol. I told her that was ridiculous and being in denial was only going to harm her further. So the other day, randomly she freaked out and said "STOP INSULTING MY PHYSICAL APPEARANCE!" and I was like, "What?" and she was like "Stop insulting my arteries." I have never heard of someone being offended by 'insults to their arteries.' What can I do to get through to her?! Thanks, I'll pick a best answer TODAY! moreOpen Question: Daughter has had soft lump on back of neck for 15 years?
Hello I have a 15 year old daughter who has a lump since birth and her doctor told us not to worry. I took her to another doctor the other day and he told me that she may have cushing's disease and needed to see an endocrinologist asap but he felt that she was fine due to her lab work. Her am cortisol level was 23.7. She has every sign of having cushing's other then her am cortisol. My question is can she still have cushing's disease with "normal" cortisol level? If not what else could the lump be? She also has High triglycerides of 160 and her hdl cholesterol level is low 35. She works out and weighs 162lbs 5"4 height. She was very tiny til she was 10 then it seemed like over night she gained a lot of weight. Her eating habits are not the best. Can any please help?! Thank you very concerned MOM! moreOpen Question: If evolution doesn't exist, then how do we explain high cholesterol?
When native Americans were mostly hunter-gatherers hundreds or thousands of years ago, and food was less readily available than in modern society, their diets consisted of primarily vegetation, nuts, berries, and the occasional animal. For some groups though gathering outpaced hunting. As if to compensate for this, over time it could be said the human body in these primitive cultures evolved the ability to maintain a higher level of cholesterol in the bloodstream, to compensate for the lack of that substance in their diet. Over time, those groups of humans which depended on cholesterol obtained from meat as a staple in their diets may have died out as they hunted their prey to extinction. Now, in the age of meat, dairy, lard and other products high in cholesterol as well as easily obtained at the grocery store, what was once a survival strategy for the body becomes a liability for those whose ability to compensate for lack of sufficient cholesterol is no longer required. Native Americans, African Americans, and other cultures with roots in hunter-gatherer societies in prehistoric times share high cholesterol as a part of their physiology in modern times. How do we explain this, if evolution didn't compell this change? moreOpen Question: total cholesterol(98), HDL(22), LDL(31) VLDL(44), Tryglycerides is(224). should I be overly concerned?

I can find everything about HIGH but not LOW. I have NO energy and sleep alot too. moreResolved Question: Why aren't health insurers allowed to deny coverage or charge higher premiums based upon physical fitness?
I eat right and I exercise seven to eight times per week. I look better - and bench more - at 40 than I did at 20. My cholesterol count is 133. It's just a matter of lifestyle: a choice. My risk of serious health problems - and significant cost to my insurer -is as a result much less than that of an overweight, lethargic person (or smoker, heavy drinker, illicit drug user, etc....). People who are judged to have caused automobile accidents, or have certain types of citations, etc... pay more than the rest of us for car insurance (a lot more) with the net result being that our premiums are lower than they would be if the total cost to insure drivers were spread evenly among us. Why can't it work that way with health insurance? Wouldn't that help reduce premiums for the rest of us, as people who make unhealthy lifestyle choices either (a) had to pay higher premiums or (b) opted out of coverage altogether? The process would be simple - every 3 years the insured would have to take a physical exam with his PCP (the insurer already pays for an annual physical). A higher premium would apply based upon weight guidelines - say starting at 20 lbs overweight - and other measures that could easily be detected via blood test and/or urinalysis, such as drug use. Isn't this how insurance is supposed to work? The concept is that a group of individuals insures against a risk of something bad happening to any of them. But self-induced health problems aren't the same insurable risk as are random health problems. It's really unfair for people who stay fit to have to pay more than the true cost of their risk, in order to allow people who don't stay fit to skate off paying less than the true cost of their risk, especially when the differences are the result of choices. And wouldn't higher premiums for obesity, smoking, etc.... serve as an additional inducement for people with bad habits to change them?Question was health, not life.Incog - yes, obesity is caused by overeating. First of all I need to describe the case from the beginning: 1- Before 2 years my mother was complaining about her memory; she was unable to retrieve some information, or names. 2- She is 62 years old. 3- At that time we went to the doctor and he said that she does not have Alzheimer, but she has depression, he gave her anti-depressant called Zoloft with Depackine. 4- Things from 2 years ago till now do not changed to the good, however she was going to the doctor every 2 months to have the normal check. 5- lately some vague signs start to appear, we should repeat a story for her twice or maybe more to understand it, and she has too much tense inside her. 6- She smokes heavily, drink coffee a lot, has high cholesterol with high blood pressure. and she takes medications for pressure and cholesterol. 7- We take her again to the doctor, he said he is not sure but she might have Alzheimer disease in an early stage. 8- Doctors, its not from my passion, but I am sure she has depression becasue she has nothing to do in home, she lived a very hard life, and she fought to grow us and she still fighting. Therefore I would ask your help ... I am quite sure she does not have that disease so would you please advise. I am willing to do anything you propose to have my mother in a good health please. ThanksDoctor's please help again, I am waiting your answers moreResolved Question: Would you marry someone with health problems that will get worse in the future?
I am in love with a man who recently asked me to marry him. Although I want to spend my life with him, his health problems are deteriorating. He has diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atrial fibrilation, and severe allergies. I love this man to death and I feel bad about my feelings of not wanting to marry him after all because I will be his care taker instead of his wife. Am I being selfish? moreResolved Question: Do you believe that beer has health benefits (I'm pretty sure beer drinkers would LOVE to hear this! LOL)?
http://www.essortment.com/all/beerhealthbene_rryq.htm Why drink beer? Who ever thought there would be health benefits to drinking beer? Well, there is! Studies have revealed that beer can produce the same benefits as drinking wine. Whether you prefer ales, lagers, stout, bitter or wheat beers, studies show that one drink a day for women or up to two drinks a day for men will reduce your chances of strokes, heart and vascular disease. It’s no secret that the stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. and the leading cause of serious, long-term disabilities . What’s interesting is that it was proven (New England Journal of Medicine – Nov. 1999) that those who drank one beer a week compared to those who drank one beer a day experienced no variance in reducing stroke risks. It is said that light to moderate drinkers will decrease their chances of suffering a stroke by 20%. A researcher at the Texas Southwestern Medical Center (May 1999) reported that those who consume moderate amounts of beer (one to two a day at the most) have a 30-40% lower rate of coronary heart disease compared to those who don’t drink. Beer contains a similar amount of ‘polyphenols’ (antioxidants) as red wine and 4-5 times as many polyphenols as white wine. Alcohol has also been attributed of its ability to increase the amount of good cholesterol (HDL) into the bloodstream as well as help to decrease blood clots. Beer also contains vitamin B6, which prevents the build-up of amino acid called homocysteine that has been linked to heart disease. Those of us who have high levels of homocysteine are usually more prone to an early onset of heart and vascular disease. A new study performed at the TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute in Utrecht indicates that those who drink beer had no increase in their homocysteine level but those who drank wine or liquor had an increase of up to 10%. Also noted was the fact that those who drank beer experienced a 30% increase in vitamin B6 in their blood plasma, thereby proving that beer (in moderation) is actually healthier to drink than wine and other liquor. Did you know? - Beer is nutritious if consumed in moderation - That beer is fat-free and cholesterol free? - Beer has a relaxing effect on the body thereby reducing stress. - It can help you sleep better - It helps prevent heart disease and improves the blood circulation - It has proven to have positive effects on elderly people. It helps to promote blood vessel dilation, sleep, and urination. An average beer contains the following: 0mg of cholesterol 0g of fat 13g of carbohydrate 25mg of sodium protein, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and vitamins B, B2, and B6 Cuisine a la biere… Beer in cooking is deeply rooted in Western Europe. Beer is incomparable as a cooking tool. With its unique flavors and versatilities is it unmatched. Due to the fact that alcohol has a much lower boiling temperature than water, it evaporates quickly while cooking your recipe and thereby only leaves the characteristic taste of the beer. Some ways to use beer in cooking are as follows: -Marinades for beef – both tenderizes and adds flavor. -Used as a substitute for water in different soups and stocks – adds much more flavor to your recipes. -Used in batters for fried foods. -Added to gravies to spice up the taste. -Used as a cooking base/liquid for steaming foods (sausages, shellfish, clams, etc.) Just remember when cooking with beer, keep your beer’s primary taste in mind. Malty beers add a sweet/nutty taste while hop lagers can add a bitter/herbal flavor. Beer increases in bitterness as it reduces to use a sweeter/malty beer when cooking for long periods of time. Now after reading all this ‘good stuff’ on beer, this isn’t to say that you should go out and get ‘boozed up’ because it’s good for you! Obviously the key, as was mentioned earlier, is moderation. Drinking in excess of these guidelines has been associated with an increased risk of several serious health ailments, such as cancer, high blood pressure, and liver disease. Be warned that drinking over moderation can lead to liver damage, dangers of drunk driving, and damage to fetuses of pregnant women who are drinking…just to name a few. The health risks of beer Ever heard of the ‘beer belly’? In a German study, Gerard Klose said ‘dangers begin to emerge in men measuring more than 94 centimeters around the middle, and become "really risky" at a girth of 102 centimeters’. ‘Too much fat’, he said, ‘makes diabetes , certain forms of cancer and heart disease a distinct possibility’.’ It’s no secret that high levels of fat accumulated on the body is unhealthy and can cause serious illness over time. An article in the London Times reports that fat that collects around the internal organs to form the typically male beer belly will also find its way into the bloodstream and in turn, raise your cholesterol levels. I am trying to decide which brand to buy but internet seems to be full of negative information about them. Most bad reviews say along these lines: "I measured with the device, got 165, next day went to the lab, they measured 205. 40 is way too big difference." Most bad reviews seem like they are written by the same person. Maybe they actually are written by someone from competition? Also why would someone owning the device go to the lab next day? But my question is: can there really be such high discrepancy in cholesterol reading? Also what is the brand you like and trust? I have trouble believing because this is an important medical measurement and if it's really so badly off those companies will quite easily get sued for that. moreResolved Question: I am giving a 4 mins. speech about chocolate. can someone help me?

There are times, where I'm simply hanging about (in other words, no intense physical activity) where my heart will simply begin to beat very intensely. So intensely that I can feel it in the back of my throat. It continues to do this for a few minutes before it simply stops and goes back to normal. I try to regulate it through breathing and meditation... but to no avail. What could be causing this? I am a 27 year old male, with no history of high cholesterol or high blood pressure (although it's been some time since my last checkup, this has happened to me since I was a teen.) I do however, have a heart murmur which was determined by my doctors as a child to be normal and not life threatening. This does not happen too often... maybe once every few months. Also, there is no significant pain... just awkward discomfort due to the intense beating of my heart. more
