Resolved Question: normal total cholesterol hdl and triglycrides but elevated ldl?

My total cholesterol is 196 (lab range says <200 OK), hdl is 62 (lab range says >60 good), triglyceride 76 (lab range says >150 good) but my ldl is 124 (lab range says 100-129 borderline). My doctor wants to treat this with medication without giving me chance to even try changing my diet. I'm worried about the effect on my liver and feel like she's being a little too quick to prescribe meds. What does it mean that my triglyceride is well below good range but my ldl is elevated? Should I ask for a chance to fix this myself? I'm sorry for the trigycrides I meant to say lab range said less than 150, not greater than  more

I have loose stool and it comes out read, well from all the wiping I do I notice a small amount of blood nothing big. Well yesterday I ate flaming hot cheetos and today I've notice a warm feeling in my stomach(no pain) and there seems to be more blood than usual and not just form wiping. Voting Question: Voting Palin for PRESIDENT?

John McCain is 72 years old. (The average lifespan for an American male is 73). According to his own three hour "release" of THOUSANDS of pages of medical documents he's already been diagnosed THREE TIMES with cancer (including every type of skin cancer there is: basal, squamous, and malignant melanoma). He's ALSO been dignosed with: degenerative arthritis, vertigo, allergies, cataracts, high cholesterol, AND high blood pressure. AND is taking six different medications for the treatment of his: sleep disorder, allergies, bad kidneys, AND prevention of blood clots (which cause strokes). These are just what could be found during the 3 hour "release" of his medical history. Does anyone else you know even have THOUSANDS of pages of medical documents??? Do we really want Palin for PRESIDENT? P.S. McCain's father (nearest MALE relative) died at age 70.  more

Resolved Question: Blood pressure suddenly dropping and feeling very faint?

this is about my mum, she takes a few medications including hypertension tablets, high cholesterol tablets, due to suffering a couple of cva's (stokes) Just recently she has developed over the last month episodes of feeling very faint and passed out one occasion. The blood drains from her face she goes totally white. We and our GP put it down to her blood pressure suddenly dropping the dr took her off one of her hypertension tablets but she is still having these episodes. Lying down with feet elevated helps but is it still related to her blood pressure or could it be something else causing it?? Since she started taking an additional cholesterol tablet this problem arose, coincidence or not?? I also suspected tia's particulary when she passed out for few seconds, we took her to hospital and they found out she had low potassium, so she now has regular checks and takes sandoz k when required. She is away in Rhodes with my dad at the moment and dad is concerned she is feeling like this there and wondering what best to do. She is taking 75mcg aspirin already and used to take plavix but was taken off as she has taken this 2 years and they said you need not take it long term  more

Resolved Question: Increased high blood pressure while on BP medication - what does that mean?

hi- My father had a severe heart attack 1 1/2 years ago. He has been doing absolutely awesome in his recovery - mostly being able to do what he was able to do prior to his heart attack, but he does get a bit more tired then he did before. He takes 5 meds each day (since) and feels great. Included in his medications are ones to reduce his blood pressure and cholesterol (prior to his heart attack he had high BP and cholesterol) and some others. He monitors his BP each day and it has been right where it should be however in the last couple of weeks his BP had been higher than usual. Today it was the highest it's been 180/90. He called his doctor and was told to take another dose of his BP med. Could anyone please tell why his BP is increasing? and why his BP seems to be getting higher? I would like to think that maybe his BP monitor is wrong or that his heart may be stronger and he may require stronger dosage to keep the BP down but I really don't know. He eats well and is active. I am really worried. Please help. Thank you :)  more

Resolved Question: If health is such an issue for Dems, why did they allow Biden to get the VP nod?

Bye bye Biden As he approaches the end of his sixth term as a U.S. senator from Delaware, Joe Biden certainly lends experience to Barack Obama's presidential campaign. But is the 65-year-old Democratic vice presidential nominee-to-be physically fit to be "a heartbeat away"? One medical expert says yes, despite his increased risk for suffering an aneurysm. Biden underwent surgery in 1988 to repair two berry aneurysms on opposite sides of his brain. (A berry aneurysm gets its name because the bulge it creates is so small it looks like a tiny blueberry.) As long as Biden is checked regularly by his health care providers, and has regular brain CT scans (at least every 1-2 years), he should have a normal life expectancy, Dr. Michael Marin, chief of surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City, told FOXNews.com. “He is probably on medication, but not for the aneurysms. Maybe for blood pressure or that kind of thing,” Marin said. “These aneurysms were diagnosed before he had any events, so he is fine.” An aneurysm is an enlargement of a normal artery. If an artery has a bulge on its surface – due to genetics or a medical condition such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure – and the artery wall becomes stretched, it can rupture.  more

Resolved Question: Starting Thyroxin .?

I have borderline underactive thyroid and high cholesterol and my doctor has told me he would like to start me on medication for my thyroid and see if this also takes my cholesterol level down ( now 7.2). Is it true that once you start thyroxin you have to stay on it? is there any other way to balance out my thyroid? if i were to take medication for cholesterol instead then could this level out my thyroid? or is thyroxin the best choice. well the doctor has actually left a note on the computer for the nurse to relate to me saying that i have to start medication and i have to go back later in the week to see the doctor as the nurse is not allowed to give out prescriptions and it will be discussed more then. I would just like to be more prepared and aware of my options.  more

Resolved Question: do you think it's normal to take medications for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes?

not that I take them, but I just prevention from these conditions. the question didn't entail taking meds for prevention. it asked if it was normal taking meds for those illnesses, and i'd venture to say that genetics is probably a small factor considering that there are other significant factors like diet and exercise.  more

Resolved Question: I just found out my SGPT levels are elevated to 63 when normal levels are 40. What could be the cause of this?

Only the SGPT levels are elevated. All other levels on liver panel are normal. I do show elevated levels of Triglycerides on the lipid profile and elevated PSA on the blood panel. I don't feel any pain and my urine function seems fine. My cholesterol is also elevated. I am afraid I may have cancer. My daughter says it may be due to my diet and because of my joint pain, I have been taking aspirin and spraying this chinese analgesic lotion to relieve the pain. Could that be it? Resolved Question: How many people are accepted into US military? (navy)?

I'ma be a senior and I wanna talk to a navy recruiter about enlisting, but I wanna know how many people are normally accepted? I don't wanna talk to a recruiter that soon because my parents are annoying and if they find out I want to they will get people they knew from the military to talk with me and look up crap online and print it out for me to read and it's just annoying and I want to avoid it as long as possible. Also, when I go, should I be open with recruiter about all health conditions I know of? Like when I was little took Zoloft, few months ago was on some anti-anxiety medication (very low dose), minor scoliosis, high cholesterol and therapists my parents made me see? Those are the only problems I have and all of them aren't really big problems that impact me because they're all so minor and don't really get worse so would it be worth it to mention it? I'll probably ask my parents to take me to recruiter's office in two or three weeks or something, after my birthday. My parents aren't overprotective they let me do wtvr I want they've just been annoying about college but I don't wanna do that and I'd assume they'll be annoying about military as well.  more

Resolved Question: My mom is currently taking Niaspan and Lipitor and I am wanting to try a more natural approach...?

My mom is 68 years old and she has been on cholesterol medication for a few years now. I am afraid of the medications long term side effects my sister also had high cholesterol and was able to control it with a medicine called Cholestoff. My mom has a dr visit for blood work tomorrow and I was thinking that would be a good time to see if we could try it. I wanted to get her on the Cholestoff and maybe a vitamin B supplement to replace the Niaspan and some Garlic tablets. I am not sure if the Dr has her best interest in mind of if he is making a commission off the drugs he is prescribing because from my understanding the Niaspan is basically Niacin which is sold OTC but she is paying over 100.00 monthly after insurance and medicare. And also I thought the Lipitor was only to get her cholesterol under control but he said she would be on it for life. I don't want her to take meds that end up messing something else up (like her liver) later on down the line if we can take care of it naturally with diet and natural things I just don't know what the dr will say and I am wondering if any one else had similar experiences? First off I am not trying to experiment I am simply seeking other options/alternatives of treatment that will fully be discussed with her doctor I am not planning on doing anything without his approval. I am not experienced in dealing with the health problems of the elderly and am simply trying to broaden my horizons to improve her quality and length of life because I love her. She is the one always complaining about all the meds she has to take and I don't want her on something that is going to make her take something else in the long run.  more

Resolved Question: High Blood Pressure Runs In My Family, How Can I Avoid This?

Almost everyone on my mother's side has high blood pressure. Ages (diagnosed) ranging from 18 (special case. Severely overweight) and up. Aunt, uncles, mom, grandma, cousin. My aunt is on dialysis after years of stupidly not taking her medication for reasons she can't even justify. And my grandmother was on it for about 5 years until she died. Just recently, this week in fact, my mom at 52 was diagnosed with high cholesterol. What can I do to avoid this? I'm 16 and an African American if that matters. I tried and succeed a couple of years to get my mom to stop cooking with shortening and go to vegetable oil. And I was almost successful in getting her to try Olive Oil before the prices of gas and everything else soared. Money's tight, so pricey organic food is not likely to happen. I don't/can't cook. After an accident when I destroyed a small pot, I am forbidden to cook anything other than things like instant noodles. (I know, right). I eat as healthy as most kids my age do. I eat tons of fruit when we have them on hand. -Not lately since our frig was broken and everything was either thrown away or frozen. I eat lots of salad with fresh spiniach and not much Italian dressing. I must admit, I do love french fries, but I'm limiting myself to have a somewhat healthy diet. I guess I could exercise more...but lately, the weather's been either too hot or raining to no end, so it limits my ability to go out and walk or ride a bike.--I do exercise at school, you should see the stairs I walk up and down and up and down on a daily base. By the end of the day, I've done 20+ flights. Anyway, I'm just rambling now, but are there any vitamins or anything I could take to spare me the dialysis machine at 40 something?  more

Voting Question: I have moderately elevated cholesterol levels...?

..and my Dr. wants me to go on medication for it. But I've read where the medications taken to control it are worse than what they're meant to cure; further, I have also read that moderately high cholesterol levels are nothing to be concerned about. In other words, it seems that one school of medical thought says, "Medicate!" in no uncertain terms, while another school of thought says that this is overblown nonsense. Resolved Question: My husband is always sick!!?

My husband is 33 years old and overweight. Two years after we were married, he discovered that he had high blood pressure and cholesterol issues. Most people who have simple illness take their medication, change their diet and they tend to lead a normal healthy life. Not his case. Every week or two at the most he complains about problems with sleeping at night. It seems as though when he goes to bed his blood pressure spikes. He has pain in his arm, his chest is heavy, and when he does check his blood pressure it's sky high. He'll take his meds and usually in an hour it will subside. I have been dealing with this with him for so long that forgive me, but I've gotten aggrevated. The doctors have changed his meds, increased them, decreased them, but he is always complaining about something. They can never find anything. He's lost weight, changed his diet and works out daily. I'm beginning to wonder if this is all in his head. Like he just expects to feel bad so he does. Please help!!!  more
