Open Question: How much cholesterol should be included in a healthy diet? (HDL, LDL)?
What is 'good' cholesterol? what does it do? what is 'bad' cholesterol? what does it do? moreVoting Question: High Cholesterol!!!!!!!!?
I've recently been for a blood test and was told I've got high cholesterol, 6.4 to be exact. I've changed my diet, not that it was bad to begin with, I get my 5 a day in and both my Mum and Dads families have the same condition, so high it's caused angina and heart attacks on both sides, so it might be hereditary. I'm 43, 12 stone, slim and run 4 miles 3 times a week and also do Pilate's, so I like to think I'm doing O.K. with that side of things. I'm not a fan of taking tablets (typical bloke) but I've been recommended a herbal alternative called Cholestro-vit by a company called Vega, formerly known as Lowersterol. Has anybody used it before and is it any good or would I be wasting my money???? Failing that, any sensible suggestions as to other ways to get it back to a reasonable level before my next blood test in February. Many thanks. moreResolved Question: What are the benefits of coconut oil and virgin coconut oil? ?
Hi! I'm Racquel. BSE student. These are some of the information in my research. Read the facts below to discover why the Coconut Oil is now referred to as the "Healthiest Oil in the World" because of its unique health- giving properties. Studies demonstrate that of all fats and oils, coconut oil is not only nutritious, but has the most health benefits. FACT No.1: Coconut oil is the best and richest natural source of the immune-boosting lauric acid among all the vegetable oils. Among the vegetable oils traded in the world, coconut oil is the best and richest natural source of lauric acid which makes up about 50 percent of its healthy fat content. All other vegetable oils are completely deficient in this. Lauric Acid, an important component of breast milkis also the primary saturated fatty acid found in coconut oil. Lauric Acid is the most important essential fatty acid in building and maintaining the body's immune system and has a powerful antimicrobial effect that can kill a wide variety of infectious organisms. Among the saturated fatty acids, lauric acid has the maximum anti-viral activity. Lauric acid is a medium chain fatty acid (MCFA), which has the additional beneficial function of being formed into monolaurin in the body. Monolaurin is the anti-viral, antibacterial and anti- protozoal monogllyceride used by humans or animals to destroy lipid coated viruses, such as HIV, herpes, influenza and pathogenic bacteria. FACT No.2: Coconut oil is rich in plant-based, healthy type of good saturated fats which is very different from the animal-based saturated fats. Coconut oil has no cholesterol. Coconut oil is rich in plant-based, healthy type of saturated fats. It is 92 percent highly saturatedfat. Not all saturated fats are created equal. Just like polyunsaturated fats which are sub classified into omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9, saturated fats are also sub-classified into short chain, medium chain and long chain. The dramatic differnce is with the fatty acid composition and is fully documented by years of scientific research. In contrast with animal fats (long chain fatty acids-LCFA) which contain cholesterol, coconut oil, which is from the plant-based source has no cholesterol. The fatty acids of coconut oil (medium chain fatty acids-MCFA) are easily assimilated - they are not stored in tha body like animal fats. There are good fats and bad fats. Our diet needs to include the good tyoe of fats such as the saturated fats from coconut oil as they play an important role in our body chemistry. Sixty percent (60%) to eighty percent (80%) of our brain tissue and our nervous system are made of very rich complex of fats. we can live without the bad fats from red meat or animals, but good fats, such as the fats from plant-based coconut oil and fats from fishes like salmon and sardines are essentilaal for good health. We dont necessarily need a low fat diet. we need a good fat diet. Goods saturated fats, such as from the plant-based coconuts, enhance the immune system. The fats around the heart muscle is highly saturated. The heart draws on this reserve of fat ion times of stress. Saturated fats also protect the liver from toxic effect of alcohol and drugs. Fifty percent (50%) of cell membranes also constitue saturated fatty acids. It gives our cells necessary firmness and integrity. Saturated fats also play a vital role in the health of bones. At least 50 percent of dietary fats need to be saturated for calcium to be effectively incorporated in the skeletal structure. FACT No.3: Coconut oil is composed predominantly of the health- boosting Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA). Coconut Oil is unique. It is unlike most other dietary oils. The secret behind coconut oil is that it is composed predominantly of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA's) or Medium chain triglycerides (MCT). It is the MCFA's which give it its remarkable nutritional and medicinal properties. Coconut oil has the most or largest concentration of MCFA's (64%) compared with the other oils and fats. The majority of the fats in our diet, whether they are saturated or unsaturated comes from the plant or animal, are composed of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA's). Soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, olive oil lard, and chicen fat as well as most all other fats and oils in our diet, are composed entirely of LCFA's. Some 98 to 100 percent of the fat you eat each day consists of LCFA's. Long chain fats take longer to digest and will tend to to be stored as stubborn fat you can't get rid of . The medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA's) from coconut ol have completely different effect on us than do the long - chain fatty acids that are more commonly found in our food. moreResolved Question: food label help 8 questions?

Calcium helps prevent osteoporosis Will make you thinner Reduces risk of heart disease Helps prevent cancer Are all fats bad for you? Unfortunately there has not been enough research regarding fats and the effect fats have on the body to give an adequate answer to this question. Yes. It is a proven fact that the body does not need fat. Fat is bad for the body and has a direct correlation to many health problems. No. Saturated fats and trans fats have great health benefits to the body. No. Polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats (such as olive oil, canola oil, soybean oil, and corn oil) have positive effects on the body. No. Hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats have positive effects on the body. moreResolved Question: High cholesterol levels... rather shocking?!?
Hi! Yesterday, I took a cholesterol test and was rather shocked with the results... it told me my levels were at 200mg, with hdl of 18 (really bad), a ratio of 11.3... all which are high risk... Glucose was fine (87) and blood pressure was low/normal (110/70). This caught me rather off guard, because I am 23 years old; 5'4 and a size 4 (so not terribly overweight); not diabetic; a non-smoker; I rarely drink alcohol; can get out an run 5 miles (although I know I should probably exercise more); I do eat chocolate, ice cream, and cheese (bad, apparently), but I eat more fruits and veggies than anyone I know, and always choose whole grains. I do eat out every once in a while, but I wouldn't consider my diet terrible. Might there be any reasoning behind these numbers? I'm, again, shocked, and quite concerned. Thank you so much! =) moreResolved Question: I think I may have PCOS or Cushing's Syndrome, what should I do?
I have a lot of the symptoms (they're quite similar), and I don't know what to do. - Are there any similar illnesses that could cause these symptoms? (Weight gain, facial flushing , stretch marks, irritable skin, depression, anxiety, irritability, loss of emotional control, increased facial hair, irregular periods, headache, general weakness. I also have a slightly high cholesterol ratio, despite a healthy diet.) - Should I see a doctor? I'm scared that they will think I'm being a hypochondriac, especially as I have a history of mental health problems (which could account for the depression, etc). - If it is something like PCOS or Cushing's, would I be okay to just leave it? Would it get worse or stay reasonably manageable? Thanks. I recently turned 20. I've always had irregular periods, and my other symptoms have worsened over the past few years. As for weight gain, I've put on around a stone per year for at least the past 3/4 years. Dr Skank - are you really a GP? I didn't think a qualified doctor could be so patronising and single-minded. Thanks for the several paragraphs of hyperbole about one of my several symptoms. If I wanted information about losing weight, I'd ask for it. What I wanted to know was what I'm supposed to do in the face of a suspected hormonal condition. Your one-track answer is completely useless to me. Also, I searched for 'PCOS' which is what my question is actually about (which you'd know if you'd taken the time to read it), and there were 1034 results. And Cushings has 22 (only 14 with the apostrophe correctly placed). moreResolved Question: Should I donate bone marrow?
I asked this question previously. But I had the prescreen tests done. Though I was a perfect match for that 15 year old girl, I ran into a snag. Turns out my creatine level is too low for donating. I was told my creatine level could be raised to an acceptable in 6 months by a high protein diet especially meat. But the sad fact the clock quits in five weeks with my 61st birthday. I did try to get them to proceed in spite of it, but can't alter policy. I only had the basics but it appears I would not regenerate the losses from the donation. Anyway, I thought I would return this last time to say that it did not turn out I could do it anyway. So the request I had of being recognized for the donation is moot. I hope they find another for her. If it were possible to make the donation 6 months from now I certainly would make the effort. Fact is they need more slack in cutoff points. I do gather that creatine and cholesterol seem to follow fairly close and raising and lowering either takes a matter of months. Bad part is everything else on me looked good. Looks like thats what I get on the Poor Man's Diet. Well quite a few people made it like I owed it. Which is definitely not the case. That is why things like this as well as blood donations are called Gift of Life. And someone also called me a troll. But I would ask, what purpose? Fact was I really wanted some recognition as I have never married no children and with my death it will be the end of my entire family back to 1839. My recognition issue was as close as it gets for my family line to continue, in a sense anyway. At least she would always have some of my DNA. Well, as of October I can only donate blood. And my preference there is to make Veterans th top recipients. And being O negative given to anyone. Well the anesthesia problem is out. I cannot be knocked out by general. Only local will work on me. Been that way ever since they tried to prep the wrong arm 4 times prior to surgery. And I couldn't be put under. They don't even bother trying because best they can do is shut down organs. And I've been through bone surgery including bone graft donor twice to myself. Total of 6 surgeries since they failed to put me under. That might have made the marrow donation pretty interesting. Too bad on the immune issue too. Nine is really strong not a cold or flu in 48 years. And I was twice brought in for double pint donations to military wounded (after they took out, they put one of saline back in) And even I am the last of my family we normally live into our hundreds and have for the last 300 years. My dad died at 44 but lost a lung, leg at the hip and otherwise riddled by 13 mm machine gun fire and took 22 years to kill him. Just we didn't reproduce much. Midnight. Read it again. My creatin was low, not high. And my cholesterol is within range and in fact at the low side of the normal with a predominance of the good HDL. And everything else is comparable to someone in good health less than half my age. Given every other factor they should have dismissed the low creatin as it wasn't all that low, just a few points in fact. They need to have more leway. As to everything else my compatability is so neutral as to not have rejection problems by another. Now when I lived and worked in some other countries I had no problems on donations and in fact was again brought in for blood to critical patients entirely on the factor my blood has such strong immune factors. European and Chilean standards are both much better than US. And the amount of money a recipient has is not a factor like it is in the US. I should mention I was brought into the USSR 4 times to save the lives of Americans after local blood had some sort of problem on them. It was compatible but there was some sort of immunity problem with Russian blood on Americans. My Russian isn't good enough to understand Russian medical terminology. Of course more blood was also flown in from the US. I was in Helsinki at the time so short hop to Moskau by C-130 (I still like spelling it their way since not set to Cirillic. I like the military system much better. There I met every person I even donated blood to. I mentioned the two double pint donations. Both in Viet Nam. One was an F4 pilot the other an F105 pilot. I get Christmas cards and letters from both the last 42 years, 2 of the 4 I donated to in the USSR still write me. One from Netherlands, one from Switzerland,Iceland, Chile, 2 from the UK, one from France. Nice they keep in touch. 3 of the 4 in the USSR were US military. The real problem is the role of the Red Cross, which I don't at all care for. Course nothing to donating blood. A few weeks your back to normal. And never slowed me down even with the double pinters. Now with the military the bonus is a pass for a steak every day for a week in the mess. In Viet Nam, 1 got to be week out of being in the mud up to my eyeballs I could go to the EU, Australia, New Zealand or Chile and still donate. In some countries to 72. Just that no longer being military I have to go through the wait hassle by Space A. Going half way around the world to donate anything is highly unlikely. Though I am planning to move to my Bolivian property that will put me close to Santiago So would you say I am relatively healthy with my resting pulse of 46, PB of 104/55, being able to run the mile in 4:47, Able to hold my breath 3.5 minutes (2:25 when swimming under water at 15 foot depth)? I got to thinking how I "owe" it to donate if I sign up. That really got me thinking. I sign up and get linked to someone. I pick up a paper and read where Charlie Manson needs bone marrow and they think they have a donor. Gee! I owe it. I don't think so! I would slam the door on that one. This attitude of owing will stop othors from giving this sort of gift. In fact Midnight really got me to reconsider. I have donated 237 pints according to a donor card. But that does not cover military donations. Know what! I'm through donating to a bunch of ungrateful blood suckers that think I owe it to them. I would continue to donate through military but I am no longer military so I can't. Looks like I will only be donating when I am in other countries that have more grateful medical systems that provide such things for the poor better than in the US. Thanks for the input. Plus, I had no idea on the procedure. Putting HGH into me. No thanks! I didn't know about that one. I love helping others. One of the best things in life for me. But I will not allow myself to be used by others. I am a slave to no one. And I am not a body parts supply for the wealthy. One more really big turn off. I couldn't help but notice, while Midnight said they had received stem cells, I could not help noticing a total omission of saying how they may have been grateful to the person providing it that just might be part of the reason they are still alive. I really had no idea that people thought this sort of thing was owed instead of them actually being grateful someone would go through this much to provide a gift that might save a live. I have been enlightened. Or rather grievously dissappointed. One final note. The low creatine level would have put any problem with the procedure entirely on me. It would have adversely affected my recovery while presenting no risk to the person receiving. On that measure I would accept the risk. I have beat odds all my life. Three times doctors have prematurely tried declaring me dead. The first time after being shot in Viet Nam. Still pisses me off getting covered up an taking my dog tag to the collections box. About an hour or so after I woke up I let them know. Another time poisoned and an 11 day coma. And out of that coma being told for two months I would die. Didn't happen. And the plane crash. I was declared dead then too. Now that was close and the reason for all my hardware. I just don't die easy. And I always recover quite well moreResolved Question: Pain in left side of chest...?
I am 35 years old. I have had this sharp pain in the left side of my chest for about 3 years or so now. It seems to come and go, but when I do feel it, it is a sharp pain and it's always in the same place, it never moves. It is in the left pectoral, kind of in the middle, upper right side. About 2 years ago, I went to the emergency room thinking I was having a heart attack because the pain was worse than it ever had been in the past. They did an EKG, blood work, etc. and everything came back normal. I do NOT feel the pain when I am exercising. It really only seems to be when I am at rest, sitting at computer, sitting at desk, or really just thinking about it. It doesn't get worse when I'm stressed or surprised, it's just a sharp pain that lasts anywhere from 30 mins to a day, stops for awhile (could be mins, hours, or days) and then restarts. I've been to my doctor about this problem, but he said it's because I have an infection in the lining around my lungs. He said that a heart related issue USUALLY isn't localized and it wouldn't be able to point to a specific spot. However, after taking meds for the "infection" it didn't seem to go away. I take Red Yeast Rice supplement to keep my cholesterol down, a low dose aspirin daily, and a garlic supplement. I exercise anywhere from 1 to 3 times a week anywhere from 1 hour to 1:30 hours per session (each session is 30 mins of intense exercise followed by about 30 to 1 hour of medium/low exercise). In my diet, I eat pretty much anything I want. I'm a pretty heavy tea drinker (drink 1 to 5 glasses of tea a day). I do not drink coffee or soda/coke. I drink about 1 to 2 glasses of water per day. Sorry for the novel... Oh, yeah, I don't smoke either. Oh, yes... and at my job, I sit at a desk all day so not very active unless I make the effort to go do it. Do not have a history of heart problems in family. Almost all family members have lived to over 70+ years old. Thanks again! Oh, please note. That this will start even if I'm not STRESSED or have not been sick in the past few days. Anyone got any idea? Anyone had this problem and given a proper diagnosis? It's a really annoying little pain. Should state that it ranges from sharp pain to burning pain, but always in the same spot. Feels like it's closer to the surface than deep inside. Pain doesn't increase/decrease to the touch or pressure (sneezing, coughing has no effect) or stretching the area. moreResolved Question: for health food and alternative medicine experts. This is a little embarassing, but I'd like to know?
I went on a cholesterol reducing diet. Gave up all hard fats (butter etc) in lieu of olive and grape seed oil, adopted grainy breads and pasta in lieu of white and refined, took fish oil, garlic and other supplements while I packed my diet with vegetables and fruits and nuts. All good stuff, right? Then out of the blue, I got a really bad stomache ache and felt like I had to 'go'. But instead of what normally happens, my body seemed to 'expell' something. After that, I got a wonderful burst of energy. Any Idea what is going on? moreResolved Question: helpp me!????? im on a diet?

I’m a 29 year old male, I try to exercise as often as I can, and I eat a basically vegetarian/Mediterranean diet, i.e., I eat fish but I don’t eat meat/pork/chicken etc.. I consider myself pretty healthy except I like beer and wine, sometimes a little too much ;) Nevertheless, I feel fine. So I just got these results back: The Good: Blood pressure is 120/80 Cholesterol is 139, total. HDL is 70 LDL is 51 All other results of the panel are normal and within range. The Bad: White Blood Cell Count 3.7, low in the normal range of 4.0-10.5. Glucose is 101, high when considered in the range of 65-99. My boyfriends mom, Kim, is amazing. She's almost fifty and her cholesterol level is so high her doctor told her she could die of a heart attack at any given moment. When my boyfriend, Matt, and I heard this news we did everything we could to encourage her to eat healthier as well as get more involved with our local gym. We even helped her plan out her meals, and offered to do her diet with her. Matt constantly begs her to play tennis just for the sake of working out. However it seems like our talks with her (which includes how much we loved her, and want her in our life, and how crucial it is for for her to eat healthier) are not working! She doesn't like it when people nag her on what to eat, because she just gets depressed. But it seems like she's not trying at all. For her, there's always a reason to go out and celebrate, which takes her off track of the diet plan. We want to encourage her without stressing her out, or making her feel bad in anyway. Now Matt's thinking of talking to her and telling her something amongst the lines of, "that if she died, he would feel like he didn't try hard enough to help her lose weight.." any advice? oh and she's tried all 40 possible RXs she could get but none of them work for her, something about the side effects and such.. moreResolved Question: What natural supplements can help control cholesterol?

I'm a 21 year old slightly overweight but healthy male. I had been drinking a lot prior to this situation but just wine every night or almost every night. On June 6th I tried gin for the first time and I've had other hard liquors before. I drank it on an empty stomach mixed with lemon juice and ginger ale (I don't usually mix, was experimenting). I drank half the bottle and started feeling the need to take deep breaths so I stopped. In the morning I had the same sensation, and a cough/irritation below my throat. I had every test done including EKG/Gallbladder & Liver scan/endoscopy/barium swallow/blood tests/allergies etc. all were negative aside from the endoscopy finding a 3-4 cm sliding hiatal hernia, which was so small it didn't show on the barium swallow and doesn't coincide w/ my symptoms since they happened instantly. I was put on all types of antacids and PPI's because they thought it was acid reflux. I took Zantac/PepcidAC/Protonix/Zegerid/Aciphex etc. nothing helped. After trying those plus antibiotics and ativan because they thought it was psychological, I started burping a lot. I burp all the time now, especially when I sit up or after I eat(not when I lay down at all). I don't burp up food, but I get an indigestion feeling like an "mmmph" as if I've eaten too much, even on an empty stomach. My tongue is coated white/yellow. My breath is worse in the morning, and I still have a cough/irritation between my collar bones that gets worse when I take a deep breath (feels air related, not swallow related). I don't regurgitate food nor do I regurgitate acid. I don't get any heartburn and none of the antacid pills have helped. The endoscopy showed no inflammation or irritation. No one knows what it is but all I know is it started to happen after I drank the gin. I haven't drank any alcohol and I'm eating a good diet, small meals, all the recommendations for stomach issues. I'm getting acupuncture and treatment through a naturopath, they have some good ideas, and are trying, but I have not been "cured" yet. I am wondering if any of you could give me some info on how gin could cause this and what it could be? I have a very very hearty stomach, I collect hot sauces and used to eat habanero sauce and very very large meals. I have a very high alcohol tolerance and never had this problem before, even after copious amounts, it's so strange. All I can think of is the day that I drank the gin, I had Japanese food for lunch (Sushi and teriaki beef) along with some spicy beef jerky (the kind they keep in the plastic vats). I've had it before so I'm not sure if perhaps I contracted some stomach bug from the food and the gin aggravated it? I have no idea, but this has lasted 2 months and I'm freaking out. Here are my stats taken by the naturopath: Ph of 5.8 (acidic) A pulse of 91 beats per minute Good blood pressure and zinc levels Low overall cholesterol, 125 High triglycerides (TG's) 137 Very low good cholesterol (HDL) 36 Very low calcium 150 Low bad cholesterol (LDL) which is a good thing, 61 A bit high in the glucose at 98 when the range is 80-95 and found my TC : HDL to be 3.4 Body fat percentage 24.7% Only serious answers please, and thank you for reading. I saw a pulmonologist who did a spirometer and flow meter test for the lungs, it came out fine. My main symptom is an irritation below my neck near the collar bones, it's constant. The shortness of breath has lessened since that day. I had a lot of stress right before this happened, transmission had problems, had to reformat computer, etc. I have college as well and that is also a bit stressful but I don't feel "stressed" right now, I feel calm. Is it possible to still be stressed even though you feel fine? I also notice my leg shakes a lot (restless leg) since this started. I'm usually not anxious or hypochondriac-like but these sensations are new to me and very unsettling. I also want to add that ever since this started, my bowel movements have been strange. They drop out in strange pieces that fall to the bottom of the toilet and never float. They have a "scattered" "dirt-like" quality with this powdery/murky stuff coming out of them floating all around, it looks like tiny little dots. When I flush, it all billows up in a huge cloud as if flushing flour that has sat on the bottom of the toilet bowl. This can't just be "GERD", this makes no sense. Something is in my stomach? moreResolved Question: My husband is always sick!!?
My husband is 33 years old and overweight. Two years after we were married, he discovered that he had high blood pressure and cholesterol issues. Most people who have simple illness take their medication, change their diet and they tend to lead a normal healthy life. Not his case. Every week or two at the most he complains about problems with sleeping at night. It seems as though when he goes to bed his blood pressure spikes. He has pain in his arm, his chest is heavy, and when he does check his blood pressure it's sky high. He'll take his meds and usually in an hour it will subside. I have been dealing with this with him for so long that forgive me, but I've gotten aggrevated. The doctors have changed his meds, increased them, decreased them, but he is always complaining about something. They can never find anything. He's lost weight, changed his diet and works out daily. I'm beginning to wonder if this is all in his head. Like he just expects to feel bad so he does. Please help!!! moreResolved Question: Is there a way to lower cholesterol fast to do well on a blood test?
Yes, I know it would be cheating myself, and I know it's unhealthy and won't fix the problem. But I keep going to the doctor and he keeps sending me for blood tests, so he can tell me my cholesterol's still high, so I can shell out another copay and get another test and go to another appointment, etc., etc. He won't put me on medication at this point, not that I want it. He says I should just try to lose some weight, but I'm happy with my weight now, and if I lost some, I'd need new clothes, which I can't afford anyway. But my cholesterol's not all that bad now, really, and I just want him to quit pestering me and making me waste my time and copay money. So is there any way, any crash diet or supplement, that I can drop my cholesterol in, say, a week, so I can do better on the blood test and he'll quit hassling me? moreResolved Question: What do you think of my thoughts on metabolism, blood sugar, and diet?
Hear me out on this. Yeah if you know the stuff I post you know this is going to get long. Settle in. I'd like this question answered seriously by serious people. It's my intention to one day write a fitness self-help book. I'd like to know what I'm talking about, not just for the sake of being informed, but because I'd be giving advice to be people from which they'd be making decisions on their lives. Naturally I feel a responsibility. I suppose one could argue that this is not the place one should form their ideas for that sort of thing; and yet one can't argue that this is a place that forms ideas, and, more specifically, ideas of mine will be formed here, regardless. Ugh. The luck I've been having I asked this question in Diseses & Conditions>Diabetes (I'm like, hey, these guys no about blood sugar and such). I guess I should have posted it at an earlier time of day because my lone response was a guy spamming weight-loss berries from Oprah (no really). I posted it on Diet & Fitness, and it didn't even show up on the Diet & Fitness page! (Apparently that's been happening with Y!A lately. That and I think my long question broke it.), and then it happened again. So anyways, fourth time the charm? The thinking on the glycemic index these days is that a high post-ingestion blood sugar spike is a bad thing, because the parts of one's metabolism that convert metabolisables into body fat work hardest when there's an abundance to work with. The reason being that in evolutionary terms the best way these nutrients can be kept is deposited as fat, not swirling around in the blood stream, which can't maintain anywhere near as high an energy density (duh) especially since excessive blood sugars have toxicity issues and must be excreted from the body. Basically the body is rushing to convert this stuff to fat while there's still a bunch of it before it all gets flushed out. I have the notion there's more to this story though. Nutritionists talk about how low glycemic foods, give you much more energy down the line than high glycemic foods of equal calories, because, for whatever reason, the blood sugar profile of these foods is less a graph with a high spike and a rapid descent into low blood sugar, and more a low spike followed by a very shallow drop over time of moderate blood sugar, which keeps you feeling energetic and full of spunk. Most metabolisable nutrients have been given the O.K. in this regards. Proteins, fats, complex carbohydrates may not be equals, but are at least far better for you than simple sugars. Now there are some things that really bother me about that. What's going on is we are given two values, the Glycemic Index, and the number of calories in food, and that's supposed to tell us everything. Just to give an example if you have a high glycemic index food with a certain amount of calories, then you know two things. You know your blood sugar is probably going to be real high after you eat that food and you know the potential metabolisable energy that your body can extract from that food. Well suppose you want to make a graph of what that would do to your blood sugar over time. What you have is the peak value of that graph and the area that should be under the graph's line. You know what? That leaves alot undefined. You could have high blood sugar plateaued for a short time that then crashes like nobody's business. You could have an immediate steep decline in blood sugar. Or, you could have a quick drop in blood sugar, with moderately elevated blood sugar for some time after. You really don't know. This problem is helped even less since there's alot we don't know about these values that we're supposed to know. The Glycemic Index is not a measure of the immediate effect on blood sugar by each metabolisable nutrient in each category. It is not produced by calculations based on the chemical characteristics of fructose, or Omega-3 fatty acids. It is an empirical measurement of the effect of specific FOODS, that contain a variety of metabolisables, on blood sugar. In a way it is a composite measurement of the combined effects of every nutrient, and even the physical makeup and texture of a given food. And as I've suggested, nutritionists would help us out alot to try and track the effects of foods on the blood sugar over time. Of course, there's reasons why that's easier said than done, and perhaps even less scientific than what we're talking about in the first place. The lasting effect of foods is sometimes lost in the background (or more than background) noise of people's fat's contributions to their blood sugar. And such data over time would require fasting, before and for the duration of the tests. And we don't know calories the way we think either. Maybe you already know that there is not a one to one to one relationship between the number of calories that we chew and swallow, the number of calories that end up as blood sugar, and the number of calories that end up as body fat. Not everything that goes into your mouth is destined to go on your hips. But, did you know it's not just because your body isn't set to turn everything it gets into body fat, and it's not just because of the Glycemic Index? What we're dealing with is a theoretical number. In theory, if your body put some real effort into it, it could pry every calorie loose from that granola bar. But, I don't think it will come even close to doing that. So what, you ask? After all that just means even less calories to worry about than you thought. O.K. Let's go back to the whole nutritionists say low glycemic index foods are good because they make you have more personal energy to take you through your day thing. You say, so I'm down on energy, that'll just encourage my body to burn some fat instead. I may feel down, but I'll feel better when I'm fit. Besides that I'm fairly certain that I've seen studies that say that starving your body whatever way you do it is not a sound strategy for lasting fitness, I still have to think that's flawed. You have to take this in the context of what that means for the parts of your body that regulate your body fat. From that perspective if blood sugars are always low that's all the more reason to convert metabolisables into fat when there's a spike in them. Whenever that spike may be. To my thinking, for obesity the problem here is not high, medium, or low blood sugar levels. It's the jumping up and down, and the steep rises and falls of the blood sugar levels. Even complex carbohydrates could be bad to this line of thinking. Sure they might not spike your blood sugar very much, but what then? How long does that last? And, how steep is the crash? That's really what largely got me thinking on these ideas in the first place. Complex carbohydrates have been lauded for how they have low glycemic index, because it's hard for the body to convert them from food to blood sugar. My reaction to that was, that doesn't mean complex carb's are good for you because they have a low glycemic index due to their low impact on blood sugar. That means complex carb's have next to no effect on blood sugar ever so their low glycemic index is worthless. They'ra just another kind of a starvation diet. And, my hunch is that since complex carbohydrates are cut from the same cloth as simple sugars they are suspect. I mean there are lots of dieticians, especially sports dieticians, who will tell you that carbohydrates are still an important part of your diet. My point is they're not an essential part of your diet. You can't live without proteins, or fats. You can live without carb's. The closest thing they're is to a nutrient carbohydate is dietary fiber (certain kinds of complex carb's), and even they're not essential, even though yes you should include them in some way, especially if you're trying to get your cholesterol levels under control. But, I suppose given the information we really have we can't any more certainly point the finger at complex carbohydrates, proteins, or fats. (But simple sugars? Oh yeah.) Actually officially, and I believe this is the position the british governemnt still stands by, the purpose of Sir Walter Raleigh's expedition was exploration. Which although I'm sure that was a priority, I think the main interest of his journey was flagrant piracy. I mean the guy sacked a convent. As for the potato, I'm fairly certain when it was brought back it was considered a botanical oddity, and wasn't actually eaten until later. Oh and as for the obesity epidemic don't forget air conditioning. People don't sweat the way they used to. And thank god for that. And on exercise yeah I'm definitely going to tell be people that exercise before diet is the key to fitness, though diet enables exercise. You gave me alot to think about. I'll do some more research. Also did this question ever show up on the front page? Do you know? moreVoting Question: In need of some advice please

My girlfriend and have been having a really hard time lately, we're both worried that I'll have an early death. I'm 20 years of age, turning 21 Sept. 16th I weigh about 360 lb., I just recently quit smoking completely, but even the I would only smoke at 1 to 3 times a week, and that only for a span of a month I used to smoke Black & Milds both Original and Wine with the "Cancer Paper" removed. As of the beginning of last week I've recently started having constent chest pains, a weird, warm sensation on the left side of my face, and what seems to be poor in my left arm which seems to switch to my right arm every now and then. I have Hypertension, about a month ago went to the emergency room because it was the very first time I ever felt the the warm feeling in my left cheek, and the feeling of poor circulation in my left arm, no chest pains, though. But the day before I went to the emergency room the feeling of poor circulation was in my right arm. When I went to the emergency room they ran an E.K.G., blood, and urine test. All 3 came back just fine. As far as they could tell my blood pressure was just through the roof. I believe they said when I was there it was 151 over 90. Which apparently I'm lucky that my head hadn't rocket'd off my shoulders. I think I heard the doctor that treated me mentioned that it could have just been an angina attack. I couldn't really understand what she was saying because there a baby that swallowed a penny was crying extremely loud. I was there for about 2 hours or so while they ran the tests, my blood pressure settled to a safe level by the time the tests were done. On the slip that was giving to me, it said that I was treated for hypertension. the following week I got a new doctor that specializes in hypertension. Even though I gave him the results of my blood test they took in the emergency room, he wanted to take another blood test to check my cholesterol since it wasn't in the first test. Felt perfect between my first doctors visit and the next one which he told me the results of the blood test for my cholesterol. He told me that my cholesterol was absolutely perfect. And that it seemed I just have extremely high blood pressure for my age. He gave me diet to help lower my blood pressure and told me that I should mild exercises like walk at least 30 minutes a day, But I didn't do them. I was prescribed meds for my high blood pressure before the whole emergency room deal.I was taking Hyzaar 50mg and Hyzaar 100mg. To be honest I didn't have any of these feelings until I started taking them. After I went to the emergency room I started taking them off and on purely because I'd just forget to, I did that until about 2 weeks ago where I took them daily like I was supposed to. The week after I took them daily was when I started to feel the sensation in my face and arm and this time with a lingering chest pains along with a loss of appetite and energy. On a scale of 1 to 10 during the week they pains in my chest were from 2 to about 5 to 6. They never completely went away, just lingered around. Every morning the pains and sensation in my left arm and cheek would flare up around the same time which was about 4:40AM. I noticed this when I found myself pacing back and forth from being freaked out, thinking I'm going to have a heart attack or something each morning around the same time. That Saturday, Aug. 2nd, I had a doctors appointment, and I told me girlfriend that I was spilling my guts about absolutely everything that I've felt during the week, and I did. He ran an E.K.G. to see if any problems have developed. He said that everything looked normal, but he also said that he's had patients that had normal results on their E.K.G. and still had a heart attack. I don't think I have to think I need to elaborate on how much that scared the crap out of me. I forgot to tell him that I didn't start to feel this way until I started taking Hyzaar. But he took me off of it and on Generic Coreg 25mg and 0.4mg nitroglycerin tablets for my chest pains. When he told me that he was going to prescribe me nitroglycerin my heart sank be cause on the way there my dad and I were talking about getting our health back in order and I asked if he was on nitroglycerin and he said no, and he hoped it would never be that bad. I'm pretty sure it hit him pretty hard as well when I told him that the doctor put me on nitroglycerin. I've only used the tablets twice, I think about a few hours after I got home from the visit, and later on that night. But since then I haven't used them. I really don't want to use them, but do carry them where ever I go as I was told to. The day after I didn't take either the Hyzaar or Corag, I wanted to get the Hyzaar completely out of my system before I started taking the Corag. But since I stopped the Hyzaar and started taking Corag my chest pains aren't constant anymore, but recurrent. And on a scale of 1 to 10 the pains are about 1 to 3. At the beginning of the week I've started walking 30 minutes a day. I don't think I have stable angina, because I would be getting chest pains after I walk, They usually accrue randomly when I'm just relaxing. I figure its between maybe prinzmetal and unstable angina. But I feel that it couldn't really be unstable angina seeing as how the symptoms call for intense chest pains, and that I don't have. Even though the pains are no longer constant I say the same thing I told my girlfriend, I'm not out of the woods yet. My doctor never told me what I could have which scares me a lot. But he brings up the fact that I'm still young, which makes me think that it's not too late. I'd really like to know whats going on with me, and if I can completely recover from this without having a heart attack or something, having things be the way they were before. Any information about what I have or what I could have would help. I know that this is a lot to read, but I would greatly appreciate it if anyone would take the time to help me figure things out. Night after night my girlfriend and I cry ourselves to sleep because we both fear what could possibly be happening to me, and what could happen to me. Again, I would greatly appreciate it if someone would help make things clearer for us. moreResolved Question: What is an effective diet plan to lower bad cholesterol level ?

I asked pediatrician if 8 year old daughter is over weight and he said yes.?
I asked to have her cholesterol checked because of me being 32 and have had a heart attack and 2 stents put in. I am concerned...she is 4'3" 87 lbs. The doc says she is about 20 lbs overweight. Her test results came in and her Trigylcerides were extremely high but everything else is normal. She is one of the pickest eaters I know. She only likes banannas in the fruit dept. and corn in the veggie dept. She will eat bread, pasta, and meats all day and night. We have tried changing our diet to all eat healthier, but it doesn't seem to be working. She will eat what she likes and then go hungry or sneak or trade her younger brother for food ( ex. eat his sandwhich cause he's not eating it or trade him her veggies for his meat) Help! I don't want to push her into some eating disorder....but I need to get this under control. This change in diet has been going on for 3 months since heart attack. It only seems to be getting worse. moreVoting Question: Can pricking someone's finger give an accurate reading for cholesterol levels?
I had my finger pricked today and was given the results immedately what my cholesterol is. It is way off the charts, which I'm a bit surprised since I have a good diet and have increased my excersise a lot in the last four months. My results are worse than what they were before I started excercersing. The nurse claimed this new finger prick way is just as accurate. She even said since I did fast it is 100% accurate. Is anyone familiar with this finger prick test. If this new way is so great, why don't all doctors just do it this way? moreResolved Question: How many years of bad diet does it take to begin to clog your arteries?
Only answer this if you can make an educated guess. I don't want any jokers. I'm serious. From 19-26 I hate burgers filled with cheese maybe twice a week or once a week and the rest of the nights I ate mainly steak and other meat dishes. My doctor says cholesterol will come down if I go on some hardcore Christian Bale diet. I've probably had 220 quarter pounder burgers in my life. I 'hate' burgers should have been I had burgers. Freudian slip. I'm slightly convinced that the burgers are going to kill me for stupid decisions I made when I was young and liked to abuse my sense of taste with a dazzling array of junk. Im 26 years old at present moreResolved Question: Cholesterol?

Because of all the hype about fat being bad for one, partly because fat has more calories than carbohydrate or protein and partly because of the fact that high saturated fat diets increase the blood levels of cholesterol, many people decided not only to reduce their fat intake, but to eliminate it. Fully explain why totally eliminating fat from one’s diet is not healthy. moreResolved Question: chemistry help?

My friend likes to pour salt from the bottle and pour it in her mouth. She eats a mound about 4 mm high and 5 mm wide. Not sure how often she eats it, but she also drinks like 2 (sometimes more) cans of diet coke a day. She's really fit; her stomach's like a rock and she's in gymnastics; but she usually only exercises on the weekend (sometimes not at all). She eats nerds like its water and eats powders like propel mixes, sugar, and various candies often. Her regular meals are usually healthy, but she really loves fast food like curly fries and chicken strips. Her family has a history of high cholesterol and when she was young (I think about 11, she's 14 now) she was right below the high cholesterol mark. Would you say she's healthy, or at any risk of something? Although she sometimes really annoys me, she's still my best friend and I'm curious. Sometimes she eats fruits randomly but not as often as some of the other things. Sometimes I do try to intervene when she's eating salt or something, but she just shrugs it off and goes on with it. Sometimes she just annoys me like how I annoy her; that's just part of our friendship; but one of my peeves is how she doesn't seem to care about how she eats and thinks I just worry too much. moreWhat Your Cholesterol Levels Mean... fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol. ...
