Resolved Question: colonoscopy while pregnant?
I've just found out I'm pregnant & I am due to go for yet another colonoscopy in just over a weeks time as I have Ulcerative Colitis and they want to check how everything is looking as it has calmed down and want to compare to the last one I had.
I have been searching the internet to see if it's ok to go for a colonscopy while pregnant and I found something that indicates it could cause immediate abortion especially in young woman (I'm 23) Worried about this, can anyone advise???
I'm going to contact the gastroentrologist on Monday anyway but would like to see what you have to say on the matter
Thank You
moreResolved Question: How does Cymbalta make you feel?
I have been on Cymbalta 60 mg. for almost a year (Jan). I really like it a lot, aside the sexual side effects. It helps me handle stress so much better, and I feel like I can handle everyday life better. It has caused constipation, but it doesn't bother me so much, because I have ulcerative colitis and it's kind've nice to not have to run to the bathroom everytime I eat. One thing I have noticed though is, I occasionally have really weird thoughts running through my mind. It's like I envision weird things going on. I'll be standing up and it's like I imagine myself falling, or last night I was smoking a cig in our garage and was putting it out on the floor and I imagined a fire starting in my face. It's really weird, and it's gotta be the medication, because I never felt stuff like that before. Has anyone else experienced weird feelings like that? I have also started smoking since I started taking Cymbalta. Before I only smoked socially and now I smoke all the time. Please tell me what you think?

I have been active for awhile, and this has never been a problem. During sex, if going in too deep, sharp stabbing pains shoot upwards from my lower right quadrant sometimes to the top of my chest. It's only been a recent problem as i have just had a flare up of my colitis. Can it be related?

moreResolved Question: Can I sue my school for rejecting my right to education?
I've been reflecting lately more than usual on an incident which occurred in my graduating year of high school. I was diagnosed with a chronic illness (ulcerative colitis) at the age of 16 and hospitalized from October until the end of December. During that time my mom would commute 2 hours to my school weekly to pick up any homework for me. When I rapidly lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks and was unable to support my normally thin frame, along with excruciating abdominal pain for a then undiagnosed condition, I took extra consideration for my education and sought out homeschooling. Where I live it's called "hospital home bound" where a tutor will come to the hospital.
My mother and I were both rejected at the request even though we both (myself with handwritten letters) explained the seriousness of my condition and hospitalization. The principal simply said, and in a (racially corresponding manner) that "the amount of Korean students and their parents lie and request extra time off with tutors to visit their families in Korea around the holidays" and therefore must take into account that my mom is probably lying as well. (and here maybe it's relevant to mention that my mother is a 5th generation Caucasian Canadian and I am her identical white daughter).
Needless to say, upon returning to the 1st semester with only a month left, I failed 3/4 of my classes that term, causing me to repeat a semester the following year, without my friends, a year older than everyone else, and extremely humiliated from weight loss, hair loss, and other disfiguring side effects of medications.
The emotional side of it would be the least, the lack of focus and concentration due to med's didn't help my grades either, I was just eager to be through with all this and take time to properly rehabilitate my body. My family and I were more concerned about my livelihood than my graduating as you can imagine. (Certainly not seeking sympathy here at the severity of it all, but when a doctor says "you need this life-threatening surgery or face the inevitable in about 2 weeks time" you get your priorities straight.)
I realize now that we could have taken more forward steps to attain what I needed for school, but my point here is: why should it be that hard? When someone is on their potential death bed, shouldn't help come easier than that? I realize also that my disease is understudied and less understood. If it were cancer, everyone understands cancer.
Most people diagnosed with this hardly know what it is let alone the details of "unknown cause, unknown cure... and ineffective treatment."
Do you think I could sue my school for their categorizing judgmental assumptions, resulting in my horrific transcript and current problems with rejection from any prospective universities above the paltry collegial institutions?
Thanks.
moreVoting Question: Gallbladder Removal or Not ?
I have been to the ER 5 times with extreme stomach(gallbladder) pain. Each time I have ate some real greasy pizza or barbecue. When I dont eat those things I feel fine. Well I had a CT scan done and they saw one gallstone. They wanted to perform surgery right there. I talked to my gastroenterologist and he said that none of the methods used to flush your gallbladder work effectively and have a real low success rate. He said I could try them but there are unwanted side affects. This decision is very difficult cause I have googled gallbladder things and I have read so many blogs from doctors to patients about having a gallbladder and what people go through after having one removed ! I have read some horrible things and many people have used Chinese medicine or hoeopathic things and it has worked and how they would have never had their gallbladder removed or wont. I have a disease called Ulcerative Colitis which is basically inflammation of the colon. I will always have it. Its under control but because of that I have had digestive problems. Which is another reason I dont want my gallbladder removed. My doctor says this is minimal and not many people have problems, However I read different. I would love to hear someones comments that has this problem or similar and some good advice would be much appreciated believe me !!! Thanks all. !!!

If you think medical marijuana should be legal, how do you think this can be conveyed to our leaders. Considering most of them are drunk most of the time, how can you get through to them?
Do you know that cocaine is a class 2 narcotic, but marijuana is class one and one plant in certain states can put you in jail for 5 years.
so, we have 12 states that have legal marijuana, but the federal government saying its still illegal. how do we get the federal government out of our health issues and get them making our economy better and fixing the national deficit?
Do you know Thomas Jefferson farmed Marijuana, and it was legal until the the 1930's. it has thousands of uses. it does not cause addition, nor does it cause cancer. can you say that about cigarettes or alcohol? I think not.
so why is marijuana illegal and so evil. well, you see, its kind of hard for a drug company to market a weed that grows anywhere like a dandelion will. the competition would be bad for business.
there are no overdoses from marijuana.
i'm not talking for stoner's i am though in favor of helping the sick with marijuana, that has no side effects, except maybe the munchies.
if you have cancer, migraines, IBS, ulcerative colitis, MS etc....there are to many illnesses to list that it helps. and for people thinking oh, a doctor will write a prescription for it instead of sleeping pills. well, please! SLEEPING PILLS ARE ADDICTIVE, MARIJUANA IS NOT. no matter what you've been told. look up NORML.org for lots of info on medical marijuana

I was looking at some research behind colitis and IgE.
Now, I have real bad dust allergies and pollen allergies. And I've gotten IgE and IgG food allergy tests and I'm controlling my diet better with that.
I was wondering since I'm reacting with those allergies all the time if the high level of cytokines and IgE's could be causing my flares ups.
I notice when I wake up in the morning, my joints kinda ache and I usually have GI distress within an hour of waking. And so I was thinking about getting allergy shots to see if they will relieve the colitis.
Is this whole cytokine allergic reaction mast cells in the bowel theory somewhat correct? And would allergy shots help if they were succesful?

moreResolved Question: Do patients with Ulcerative Colitis have faster progression of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis?
My husband has just been diagnosed with PSC. He has had UC for over 10 years. In December 2007, routine blood tests found increased levels of billirubin among other discrepancies and he displayed jaundice so the doctor ordered extra tests in the ensuing months. He was taken off Azathioprine around March with no change in blood tests. Then he had an MRI and a liver biopsy only a couple of months ago and both returned negative results so we were at a loss as to the cause. A different doctor put him on Ursofalk and ordered another MRI and a CT which were performed a couple of weeks ago and it shows PSC with signs of cirrhosis already. I may not be a doctor but this seems like very rapid progression for a usually slowly progressing disease. Does the UC meds or history cause a quicker progression of the disease? What is the expected progression from here? Thank you :)

For those of you that have jumped on the negative bandwagon, all of this information has been well documented in medical journals. I did both with my twins, breast and bottle.
On alcohol they have warnings because it is a dangerous substance, so is formula. It is undeniable that it kills 1.5 million children per year. WIC in many states is having people sign an informed consent with this information. I am just seeing what others think.

Hi, I'm hoping you all can help me. I'm 19 years old, and for awhile now, I've been dealing with really bad acid reflux. everytime after I eat, sometimes it just happens even when I don't eat, I get this horrible gurgling in my throat. It feels like all this air and like I just need to have a really nice big burp. But I can't always burp for some reason, like it won't come all the way out. Does anybody know how I could treat this? I take antacids and medicines like protonix, but it still doesn't help. It's really embarrassing when I'm out in public and it happens.
I also, get this gurgling feeling in my rectum, and sometimes when I go to the bathroom, it's not stool, it's just mucus. Sometimes, the stool will float. It's only the second time that that's happened though. Other times I'll get constipated, I also have muscle cramps/spasms, The scale says I haven't lost any weight but my clothes are looser then they used to be. But when my clothes are off, I look healthy (I look the same size I always have). I also get floaters in my eyes sometimes, slight weakness, fatigue, etc...
I've had about 3 CBC's done, the last one showed that my WBC count was slightly elevated. Only by 5 points though. The doctor wasn't even alarmed. Then I had my thyroid levels and celiac levels checked. The thyroid levels were fine, But my celiac levels were SLIGHTLY elevated. The gastroenterologist wasn't ever worried about that either. I was supposed to have an endoscopy and a colonoscopy done, But I have really bad ocd and was worried that I might catch some horrible disease if the tools weren't properly sterilized. I have been under A LOT of stress lately. Probably since march 19th, 2007 (day before my birthday). I think that may contribute a lot ot my problems. My mom and grandma also have IBS. It's definitely handed down in our family, lol. As is GERD. There has never been anyone in our family who had celiac or ulcerative colitis or anything. At least, not that I know of. Also, I had a stool sample done, and I just got my results today. I thought I had a tapeworm, but my stool results showed nothing. They didn't find any worms or blood or anything. I heard that sometimes they can diagnose ulcerative colitis and crohn's disease through stool samples. I have very bad hypochondria and anxiety disorders and stuff. Do you think maybe all these things could be related to stress? I've never been this stressed out before and I really think it's taking a toll on me. I've always been pretty healthy besides that spontaneous eggy burps, nausea/vomiting, and dizzy spells I get once in awhile. But I've had those since I was in elementary school. I was thinking gastroparesis? But I don't know, I'm too tired to think anymore.
Thanks for any help you can give me! Peace!
moreResolved Question: Does anyone have crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis?
I found this video on Youtube. It's about The Exposition about Mycobacterium Avium Subespecies Paratuberculosis (MAP) and how it causes Crohn's disease by professor John Hermon Taylor.
I honestly think we have something here and hopefully the first step toward a cure.

moreResolved Question: What can help with fatigue caused by ulcerative colitis?
Hi, does anyone know of a way that I can stop feeling so tired and lethargic all the time? I have ulcerative colitis, but even when I am in remission, I feel really tired and lost all my energy. I have tried high caffeine, ginseng... a good diet, multivitamins and exercise. But nothing seems to work. It does nothing at all for me. Does anyone know a herb or something that WILL work for me? I have heard about Rhodiola, but I am doubting that this will work for me as nothing does.
Thank you.

moreResolved Question: Prednisolone - Colitis - Testosterone - hormonal balance etc...?
I hope someone with a medical background or knowledge can help.
I have ulcerative colitis. From time to time I have to take steroids (prednisolone 40mg).
I noticed the last time I took it, for couple months, I developed some tenderness in my breast tissue (I'm a 26 yr old man). I went off the steroids, as per my doctor's advice. I notice now that my left pec is slightly larger than my right. There is no longer any tenderness There is no hardness under the nipples or anything. I do not work out at the gym.
I'm a bit worried. I may have to take steroids again as my colitis is flaring up now. I hate having to take them.
I think that the steroids caused something to happen in my breast area. I fear what these drugs do to a man's body, and I wonder if this particular steroid causes some hormonal imbalances that I should be worried about.
Additional info: I am also on Imuran and Asacol for colitis. I tolerate these drugs pretty well, but when colitis flares, steroids are the only way
Is the hormonal disruption permanent, or do things return to normal some time after you stop steroid use?
What is DHEA? Can I get it from my doctor (UK NHS) and is it safe?
What tests can be done to check my adrenal function?
moreResolved Question: How to reduce joint inflammation?
Over the last 9 months, I've had symptoms of ulcerative colitis, severe at times.
I also, think that because of ulcerative colitis, I'm having some form of joints inflammation or whatever it is, that uc causes...
During the time I'm having moderate or severe uc symptoms, I also feel I have arthritis like symptoms in my hip joints and my fingers. Sometimes I feel like I'm 60 y/o although I'm in my early 30's.
What the heck is this? Damn.
moreResolved Question: Do i have Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis?
Okay i asked my doctor about this and he thinks i have Crohn's Disease but on the other hand he thinks i may Ulcerative Colitis. Here are my symptoms..
Go to the bathroom about 4 -5 times a day with blood
Never had any pain
Don't have fistulate or anything on my skin (rashes, marks)
Lost some weight
was never annemic
My entire colon was inflammed
just a little bit of inflamation on my illieum but not enough to cause anything.
Never had a fever nor vomitted
Never really felt sick
Do these symptoms sound like Crohn's or Colitis disease? Hope you guys can help!
Well my rectum area is inflammed and i do see a GI specialist. I'm not so sure if he is a good one though because he doesn't seem to know a lot. I did get a colonscopy and the doctor said it looks like you have UC. But after doing this one test in Cali they determined i have Crohn's. It's very strange though because i don't really feel like i have crohn's, i mean yeah i go to the bathroom a lot of times but it's not like i feel terrible. It's just annoying and the only reason i go to the doctor is because there's blood. Anyway after the colonscopy i do have relatively mild - moderate inflammation. I'm on remicade right now and had my second infusion one week ago. So far i am going to the bathroom 1 - 2 times a day. There is still a little bit of blood but nothing like before. Do you think this remicade is working on my so far or after two infusions i should be healed by now?

moreResolved Question: Cure for Pancreatitis and colitis?
My brother has pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, along with H. Pylori virus? I read "Ulcerative colitis is not caused by emotional distress or sensitivity to certain foods or food products, but these factors may trigger symptoms in some people. The stress of living with ulcerative colitis may also contribute to a worsening of symptoms." He's taking antibiotics, but what else would he need to do for prevention for Pancreatitis and colitis?
moreResolved Question: What causes ileitis?
Just recently had a colonoscopy with ileoscopy with biopsy. Lab results came back saying, "The ileal biopsies show an active ileitis with features suggestive of chronic ischemic injury. Although the differential diagnosis includes NSAID-induced damage and Crohn's disease, NSAID-induced damage is favored in these biopsies." My doctor has already ruled out Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, and I don't take any anti-inflammatory drugs. What else could cause the ulcer in my ileum? Thanks

moreResolved Question: Mold and Health?
For 8 years members of our family, one in particular, has been experiencing symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis and ever-increasing food allergies. We discovered mold under the bathtub, which was installed a little over 8 years ago, and since the treatment and replacing of all items effected, ALL the symptoms have gone away.
Our doctor says he knows of no solid research to support such a link, so I am asking for help in locating research to support mold causing gastrointestinal disorders and food allergies.
