I workout 5 day and normally take a full weeks rest every 6-8 weekss a week.. ..I work out pretty hard..I only work each muscle one time per week and warm up before and stretch before and after..I workout correctly..but I feel as though I over worry..I have tendinitis due to have Ulcerative Colitis..siunce my colon stays inflamed it causes my joints to sometime ache and be in pain..my doctor told me proper exercise would be best though to relieve the pain from the tendinitis..and for to continue to stay active.. I have lifted weights since I was 16 so 4 years now..My problem is though when I am at the gym friends always slap me( not really hard) on my arm, chest back and where ever to say "see ya later" or something like that..I was wondering if this could do any muscle damage?...Sometimes I feel slight discomfort and sometimes only when i really think about it..I don't notice any bruises and I can still lift weights ..I was wondering if I am just over worried about it..I consume a good diet with plenty of protein and also take a multi and amino acids..I am not sure if I am over worried about muscle damage from friends slapping me or me bumping into things ( am clumsy lol.??? more

Voting Question: What Is Blood In Feces?

What is the most likely cause of blood in the feces of a 19 year old woman? The symptoms do not include constipation or diarrhea thus ruling out Ulcerative Colitis. Any info from doctors nurses or any other people educated on the topic would be helpful. more

Voting Question: What disease do you think causes more suffering to those inflicted; Crohn's/Ulcerative Colitis or Autism?

Inflammatory bowel disease causes much pain and humiliation to those who have it, not to mention the social terror of having a public accident: but it can be deadly. It limits what you can do, where you can go, what you can eat, and can determine how long you have to live. Autism causes much personal and emotional pain to the sufferer. But autism isn't always mean a totally lonely and unsatisfying life; there are varying degrees of social impairment, such as Asperger's, which doesn't mean a life total isolation. Which one would you say would be worse to have?True, they're pretty different. However, like you said very few IBD patients don't know they're suffering, whereas this can happen with Autistic people. That's why I am inclined to think in most cases IBD is worse. In no way does that mean I don't feel absolutely horrible for Autistic people. more

Resolved Question: C-DIFF vs ULCERATIVE COLITIS?

Resolved Question: Ulcerative Colitis Questions?

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 3 weeks ago. I was put on Lialda, 4 pills a day and prednisone. I'm also allergic to sulfa drugs, and on the Lialda brochure it says to tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfasalazine, which is a sulfa drug. My UC hasn't gotten any better, in fact it seems to be getting worse, with more frequent trips to the bathroom and really bad abdominal pain. Could my allergy be causing this? Also, with those of you with UC how long did it take for you until you went into remission? And what types of food (specifically) did you eat that made flare ups easier to deal with? Thank You. more

Resolved Question: A question on bowels?

My father has suffered for six months trying to get to the root cause of his bowel problems. He is in constant pain: severe burning, itching, and throbbing. His diet is fine, he eats well. He does excecise too. He has been prescribed numerous ointments and creams, to no avail. He's even tried suppositories, alcohol, pot, anti-biotics. He thinks he has bowel cancer. He always wakes up with residue in he morning. He allways feels nauseated, and burps after one cup of tea. When he has a bowel motion it stings and leaves him breathless. His feces are all broken up like pepples. He keeps needing to go to the toilet, but nothing comes out. He's had swabs done and they still don't know what the problem is. He has had a little bit of codeine and some Tramadol. He felt like commiting suicide the other day. He's 45 and I'm 23. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION: Can anybody, anywhere help us out? He is at his wits end. I'm sending out an S.O.S Does he have Ulcerative Colitis? Does he have hemmaroids? What about Crohns disease? Is this irratable bowel syndrome or Inflammatory bowel disease? This issue has gone on for so long, its stale. Its a 24hour round the clock problem. Thank you for your time. more

Resolved Question: Help with diagnosis of abdominal pain?

I am a fifteen-year-old female grade nine student. I don't eat regularly, or eat healthily most of the time. Usually I skip lunch or breakfast, and sometimes supper. I'm 5'3 ½ and I'm about the right weight for my height and age. I have trouble falling asleep, and am usually up until midnight-2am. I get up at 7 am. So I usually get between 5-7 hours of sleep a night. I don't exercise regularly, either. Since about February (so for like 2 months), I've been feeling near-constant pain in my lower and left abdomen. I often get chills and cramps so bad that I have to double over. I also have to double over to muffle the gurgling sound coming from my stomach. It's not a gurgling from being hungry. It's quite different, and it sounds like it comes from my left side. Also, I drink a substance to curve my appetite so my stomach won't growl from hunger in class - therefore, it's not growling from being hungry, as the drink makes me feel full. My symptoms include: Dull pain near the navel, loss of appetite, nausea soon after abdominal pain begins, abdominal swelling, bloating, inability to pass gas - or too frequent gas, dull/sharp pain near my left/lower abdomen, severe cramps, constipation, weight loss, pain in the chest, behind breastbone (once or twice), coughing, hoarseness, indigestion, (I get secondhand smoke), weakness, pain/tenderness in the lower left side of the abdomen, chills, fever, stomach cramps, tiredness. I get dull, gnawing stomach pain that comes and goes. The pain is often worse when my stomach is empty, and sometimes goes away after eating. I don't think I digest properly, and sometimes feel nauseated. Often, I feel like I have to pas gas, but sometimes I can't, or I have to hold it in. Also - "Abdominal pain in IBS is often characterized as being intermittent or constant, tender upon palpation and can be relieved by passing gas or having a bowel movement. It has also been described along a range from mild to severe. The pain can become so severe that it can affect the sufferer's quality of life and cause the person to miss school, work, and other social events." My pain on the left/lower side ranges from mild to severe, and sometimes can be relieved by passing gas, having a bowel movement, or eating. Recently, it's been getting worse and worse and I keep missing school, and I fear that I may fail or something. But it's not my fault - it's so distracting that I can't think or concentrate, and it's hard to try and work when you can feel and hear your abdominal organs messing around. My symptoms point to some of the following: -Appendicitis -Esophageal Cancer (I don't think I have cancer) -IBS; Irritable Bowel Syndrome -Diverticulitis -A stomach ulcer (peptic ulcer) -Gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) -Small or large bowel obstruction -Ulcerative colitis (with pain in the left side) -Dysentery -A mass -A hernia (both my mom and her brother have them) -An obstruction -Indigestion -Constipation I can't go see a doctor right now because my mom has to fill out some forms. I would go to the walk-in clinic, but I'm not sure how much help they'll be. What would I tell the doctors anyway? I couldn't just give them the list of my symptoms, it would probably be shrugged off as indigestion or constipation. And I don't think this can be shrugged off as constipation or indigestion if it happens so frequently unless there's something wrong with my diet/body/lifestyle. But then - how would my diet cause fevers, chills, and so much pain? The pain comes and goes so I can't ever say when it will occur. The pain usually begins between 9:20am and 10:45am and continues to come and go throughout the day, and make gurgling sounds and cause cramps and pain. When the pain starts early in the day, like today - it began when I woke up - then I know it will last a while. And it has - ever since it started this morning, it's been acting up horribly, as usual - so I came home sick. I don't know how to describe the pain/symptoms/illness to my friends/family, because I don't know what it is I have. All I know is that I experience pain, bloating, loss of appetite, fever, chills, inability to pass gas - or too frequent gas, constipation, coughing (sometimes), indigestion (sometimes), weakness (sometimes), tiredness and cramps the most - but mostly just horrible pain and gurgling sounds. When it hurts my left side - it hurts my entire left side of my torso - it's so bad that I have to literally clutch my side, and dig my fingers into my skin. Applying pressure helps sometimes, but I also experience lower abdomen pain, like around my waist. So - what do you think it is? I don't know if it is just constipation or indigestion, or what it is I have. I don't want to overreact, because I think I might be, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. And I haven't gotten my booster shot since my first one - do you think that will make things worse for me? more

Resolved Question: I've become too involved in my research, I think it's causing me excessive stress?

There's a part of me that wishes I could undo reading and learning so much. There's a considerable amount of stress involved in realizing how things work in world issues, science and medicine. Or is that just my personality getting hung-up on negative things? I'm really not sure. It's like I've entered adulthood a second time with all the additional pressure weighing heavily on me. Did I mention that there is an all-natural substance or special diet which can prevent most chronic illnesses? I'm talking about obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative colitis and other autoimmune disorders like MS? Shoot me an email if you have any questions.Aha don't call them 'conspiracy theories,' that's very negative aha. The people with all of the money will always have their own interests in mind when they tell you anything in society. So they will ignore all-natural and dietary approaches to mental health because they don't make them any money, etc. more

Resolved Question: Have I been discriminated against at work?

I have ankylosing spondylitis and ulcerative colitis, two disabilitating auto immune diseases which recently have caused me to miss a slightly increasing number of days off work. I notified my boss correctly according to my contract and am contracted to 10-15 hours of work per week. However, my boss told me that because I am unreliable due to my condition, that she is not going to give me any more work hours until my chronic condition has been 'cured'. She said if it affects me financially i may consider terminating my employment. I think that this is not allowed, and would go under the law of discriminating by dissability as she did not make any adjustments to help, just stopped giving me work hours. "It is against the law too to treat you less favourably because of your disability - including recruitment and selection, terms and conditions, dismissal and redundanct" - Citizens advice bureau website. "Employers can treat disabled people less favourably only if they have a sufficiently justifiable reason for doing so, and only if the problem cannot be overcome by making 'reasonable adjustments'. For example, an employer would be justified in rejecting someone with severe back pain for a job as a carpet fitter, as they cannot carry out the essential requirements of the job. Examples of the types of adjustments that an employer might make include:- * making physical adjustments to the premises * supplying special equipment to help you do your job * transferring you to a different post or work place * altering your hours of work or giving you extra time off." - also from the Citizens advice bureau website. With this taken into account, is she in the right or the wrong? Would her not giving me any work hours until my chronic condition has been cured, be classed as disability discrimination or as her taking 'reasonable adjustments'? Note: I also stated on my employment contract of my diseases, but was still employed. more

Resolved Question: Does any one know if calcium supplements affect ulcerative colitis?

My husband is in another flare of his colitis the only thing we can think that he has changed is taking calcium supplements upon the doctors request. This is the second time he has tried this and the second time that it has flared. Despite attempts to find out from the doctor and the specialist as well as the pharmacist we are being told this could not be the cause. Has any one else had this problem or reaction to taking calcium? more

Resolved Question: What can I do about colitis?

I have ulcerative colitis, and am having a painful flare up. The problem is that I am pregnant, and can't use any of the treatments I have found. I read that aloe vera juice can help ease inflamation, but it can also cause a miscarriage. I know you can use it in an enema, so I am wondering if it is safe to do that, or if it would be just as dangerous as drinking it. Anyone know or have any other ideas? more

Resolved Question: Abdominal diagnosis, i'm at the end of my rope...?

I'm now 18 years old and have been suffering from abdominal pain for 8 years now. My general practitioners and psychologists tell me that it is stress related. I do have social anxiety which has led to a degree of abdominal pain and depression. All of my symptoms for the past 8 years include: - Fatigue. - Shortness of breath. - Extreme weight loss. - Severe cramping just below left rib cage. - Frequent diarrhea (at least once a week) - Mucus in stool - Acute pains all throughout abdomen - Fever - Loss of appetite I understand all of these could be caused by anything, and not just one thing altogether. I just want someone to point me in the right direction of what to look for. I did some research and all I could come up with was the possibility of Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. I doubt these things could develop in a 10 year old and not be seen by doctors. I forgot to mention i'm 5'11, 110 lbs, 18 years old, and still don't know the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  more

Resolved Question: colonoscopy while pregnant?

I'm going to contact the gastroentrologist on Monday anyway but would like to see what you have to say on the matter Thank You  more

Resolved Question: How does Cymbalta make you feel?

I have been on Cymbalta 60 mg. for almost a year (Jan). I really like it a lot, aside the sexual side effects. It helps me handle stress so much better, and I feel like I can handle everyday life better. It has caused constipation, but it doesn't bother me so much, because I have ulcerative colitis and it's kind've nice to not have to run to the bathroom everytime I eat. One thing I have noticed though is, I occasionally have really weird thoughts running through my mind. It's like I envision weird things going on. I'll be standing up and it's like I imagine myself falling, or last night I was smoking a cig in our garage and was putting it out on the floor and I imagined a fire starting in my face. It's really weird, and it's gotta be the medication, because I never felt stuff like that before. Has anyone else experienced weird feelings like that? I have also started smoking since I started taking Cymbalta. Before I only smoked socially and now I smoke all the time. Please tell me what you think? more

Resolved Question: Pain during sex w/ colitis?

I have been active for awhile, and this has never been a problem. During sex, if going in too deep, sharp stabbing pains shoot upwards from my lower right quadrant sometimes to the top of my chest. It's only been a recent problem as i have just had a flare up of my colitis. Can it be related? more

Resolved Question: Can I sue my school for rejecting my right to education?

I've been reflecting lately more than usual on an incident which occurred in my graduating year of high school. I was diagnosed with a chronic illness (ulcerative colitis) at the age of 16 and hospitalized from October until the end of December. During that time my mom would commute 2 hours to my school weekly to pick up any homework for me. When I rapidly lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks and was unable to support my normally thin frame, along with excruciating abdominal pain for a then undiagnosed condition, I took extra consideration for my education and sought out homeschooling. Where I live it's called "hospital home bound" where a tutor will come to the hospital. My mother and I were both rejected at the request even though we both (myself with handwritten letters) explained the seriousness of my condition and hospitalization. The principal simply said, and in a (racially corresponding manner) that "the amount of Korean students and their parents lie and request extra time off with tutors to visit their families in Korea around the holidays" and therefore must take into account that my mom is probably lying as well. (and here maybe it's relevant to mention that my mother is a 5th generation Caucasian Canadian and I am her identical white daughter). Needless to say, upon returning to the 1st semester with only a month left, I failed 3/4 of my classes that term, causing me to repeat a semester the following year, without my friends, a year older than everyone else, and extremely humiliated from weight loss, hair loss, and other disfiguring side effects of medications. The emotional side of it would be the least, the lack of focus and concentration due to med's didn't help my grades either, I was just eager to be through with all this and take time to properly rehabilitate my body. My family and I were more concerned about my livelihood than my graduating as you can imagine. (Certainly not seeking sympathy here at the severity of it all, but when a doctor says "you need this life-threatening surgery or face the inevitable in about 2 weeks time" you get your priorities straight.) I realize now that we could have taken more forward steps to attain what I needed for school, but my point here is: why should it be that hard? When someone is on their potential death bed, shouldn't help come easier than that? I realize also that my disease is understudied and less understood. If it were cancer, everyone understands cancer. Most people diagnosed with this hardly know what it is let alone the details of "unknown cause, unknown cure... and ineffective treatment." Do you think I could sue my school for their categorizing judgmental assumptions, resulting in my horrific transcript and current problems with rejection from any prospective universities above the paltry collegial institutions? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Gallbladder Removal or Not ?

I have been to the ER 5 times with extreme stomach(gallbladder) pain. Each time I have ate some real greasy pizza or barbecue. When I dont eat those things I feel fine. Well I had a CT scan done and they saw one gallstone. They wanted to perform surgery right there. I talked to my gastroenterologist and he said that none of the methods used to flush your gallbladder work effectively and have a real low success rate. He said I could try them but there are unwanted side affects. This decision is very difficult cause I have googled gallbladder things and I have read so many blogs from doctors to patients about having a gallbladder and what people go through after having one removed ! I have read some horrible things and many people have used Chinese medicine or hoeopathic things and it has worked and how they would have never had their gallbladder removed or wont. I have a disease called Ulcerative Colitis which is basically inflammation of the colon. I will always have it. Its under control but because of that I have had digestive problems. Which is another reason I dont want my gallbladder removed. My doctor says this is minimal and not many people have problems, However I read different. I would love to hear someones comments that has this problem or similar and some good advice would be much appreciated believe me !!! Thanks all. !!!  more

Resolved Question: if you think medical marijuana should be legal what is the best way to get our state leaders to know that?

If you think medical marijuana should be legal, how do you think this can be conveyed to our leaders. Considering most of them are drunk most of the time, how can you get through to them? Do you know that cocaine is a class 2 narcotic, but marijuana is class one and one plant in certain states can put you in jail for 5 years. so, we have 12 states that have legal marijuana, but the federal government saying its still illegal. how do we get the federal government out of our health issues and get them making our economy better and fixing the national deficit? Do you know Thomas Jefferson farmed Marijuana, and it was legal until the the 1930's. it has thousands of uses. it does not cause addition, nor does it cause cancer. can you say that about cigarettes or alcohol? I think not. so why is marijuana illegal and so evil. well, you see, its kind of hard for a drug company to market a weed that grows anywhere like a dandelion will. the competition would be bad for business. there are no overdoses from marijuana. i'm not talking for stoner's i am though in favor of helping the sick with marijuana, that has no side effects, except maybe the munchies. if you have cancer, migraines, IBS, ulcerative colitis, MS etc....there are to many illnesses to list that it helps. and for people thinking oh, a doctor will write a prescription for it instead of sleeping pills. well, please! SLEEPING PILLS ARE ADDICTIVE, MARIJUANA IS NOT. no matter what you've been told. look up NORML.org for lots of info on medical marijuana  more

Resolved Question: Help with Vagifem query please?

I had a total Abdominal Hysterectomy in March and I don't seem to be suffering much at all with the menapause. I'm 50. However I do suffer greatly from Ulcerative Colitis and Aneamia. I am not sleeping at all well and for the last few weeks I am having to get up at night up to 6 times for a wee so this is agrevating my insomnia and causing more distress to me. A visit to my GP has confirmed NO urinary infection and my doctor wants me to try Vigifem. I'm a bit confused really as there is nothing about excess peeing in the paperwork with this oestrogen replacement medicine and I do NOT have ANY of the syptoms that are mentioned in that leaflet at all. I don't want to take any hormone replacement therapy that I don't really need as is carries some concern, but I do want this bladder problem to go. Is Vigifem REALY going to help my condition please? more

Resolved Question: Will Clindesse affect my Ulcerative Colitis?

I was diagnosed with UC 5 years ago and until recently, I haven't had any problems. I stated taking Clindesse for a Bacterial Infection which did not cure it. Assuming my doctor new my previous UC condition I didn't even think of questioning them about taking the meds. I assumed they would not prescribe something that was not recommended for me. After about a week, I have stated getting blood in my stool. I read the insert given to my by the pharamcy and it clearly stated....USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have a history of ulcerative colitis.....After asking the doctor if the Clindesse was the cause of my bloody stool, the doctor said no its not possible to get those problems from dosage of Clindesse. Has anyone else had these problems? or have any advice? more

Voting Question: Ulcerative colitis theory questions.

I was looking at some research behind colitis and IgE. Now, I have real bad dust allergies and pollen allergies. And I've gotten IgE and IgG food allergy tests and I'm controlling my diet better with that. I was wondering since I'm reacting with those allergies all the time if the high level of cytokines and IgE's could be causing my flares ups. I notice when I wake up in the morning, my joints kinda ache and I usually have GI distress within an hour of waking. And so I was thinking about getting allergy shots to see if they will relieve the colitis. Is this whole cytokine allergic reaction mast cells in the bowel theory somewhat correct? And would allergy shots help if they were succesful? http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1413125 Thats one of many articles that suggest IgE affects colitis. Any ideas?I also forgot, I was looking up nitric oxide and colitis and they play a role together. I was wondeing if I supplement with a nitric oxide supplement or just plain ol L-arginine would I benifit from it? 1 second ago http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cp... With my daughter they were worried that i might pass on hemolytic anemia to her during pregnancy...does this mean that I have auto immune hemolytic anemia? What type of questions exactly should i ask my doctor? Has anyone been in my shoes before? Does this mean i have some type of blood disorder? i have never been actually diagnosed with anything...thanks so much for answering...it will be great to actually get a diagnosis for once and to know what is going on with my body! The iron infusions didn't do anything to help my anemia at all... more

Resolved Question: Tips on helping spouse deal with my chronic illness?

I have ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel disease, and severe gastric reflux that causes stomach pain. I have frequent flare ups and it causes me to not be able to do things sometimes, like going out with friends with my husband and family, always being fanatical about knowing where the bathrooms are in every single place we go to, sometimes having to leave if foods effect me in a bad way, etc. My husband is so supportive, and he's never let on that it bothers him, but I can't help but feel like I drag him down sometimes--I drag myself down, it gets depressing when you can't just relax and have a good time without worrying if I'm going to get sick in public! Anyone have any advice to help me relax or to help my wonderful husband to deal with it? more

Resolved Question: Do patients with Ulcerative Colitis have faster progression of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis?

My husband has just been diagnosed with PSC. He has had UC for over 10 years. In December 2007, routine blood tests found increased levels of billirubin among other discrepancies and he displayed jaundice so the doctor ordered extra tests in the ensuing months. He was taken off Azathioprine around March with no change in blood tests. Then he had an MRI and a liver biopsy only a couple of months ago and both returned negative results so we were at a loss as to the cause. A different doctor put him on Ursofalk and ordered another MRI and a CT which were performed a couple of weeks ago and it shows PSC with signs of cirrhosis already. I may not be a doctor but this seems like very rapid progression for a usually slowly progressing disease. Does the UC meds or history cause a quicker progression of the disease? What is the expected progression from here? Thank you :) more

Resolved Question: Somebody laced my food with insanity hot sauce. I feel so horrible! What can I do?!?

I was working and on break, I ordered and sandwich. When I bit into my food all I could do was think I didn't think these were spicy?! WHAT?! then I started to gasp for air, and tears poured from my eyes. Someone put the hottest of all hot sauces I have ever encountered on my food and the stinging, hotness, and pain lasted for 15 minutes. Unfortunatly I have ulcerative colitis, a stomach problem, and this hot sauce is causing me to feel horrible! I don't know what to do, though the effects have worn off, I feel stomach sick and Im worried that this could hurt my intestinal tract. Is there anything I can do to stop the pain and stop the negative effects of the hot sauce?!It was Habenero pepper sauce. more

Resolved Question: New diagnosis of Arthritis / Dactylitis please help?

Hi, i am 27 and have recently been diagnosed with Enteropathic arthritis and Dactylitis. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (IBD) in 2004 and had my colon removed last year. I am suffering quite badly but do not want to start immunosuppressive drug therapy yet as i want to have a baby. I am seriously hoping that the hormones released in pregnancy may relieve some of the symptoms but i want to be healthy enough to carry a child. My biggest problem at the moment is my little toe, this is the point where i have been told i have dactylitis and i never would have thought that such a little toe could cause so much pain!! I am finding real difficulty with shoes, they all hurt! I wear flip flops when i can but being in sunny old England ;o) it's not so easy. Any suggestions?? Any help you could offer would be gladly welcomed! thank you Claire xx more

Voting Question: What kind of damage can years of excessive toilet straining do to your body?

I am 31 and have suffered with severe IBS since 16. This caused me to strain severely on the toilet frequently, almost spasm-like. At one point I thought I might have ulcerative colitis. I already have hemmorhoids that bleed occassionally. Right now, I am trying to get this under control. But what could I have damaged. Could I have an anerrysm or anything like that. This IBS issue has been pretty severe for me, I'm not exxagerating.I am finally making huge dietary changes to get my IBS in control. It means giving up a lot of food I like, though :( more
